My personal favorite is The Ballad of Fallen Angels. Amazing choreography in the fight scenes, and Yoko Kanno's most surreal and compelling score is found in this episode. The runner up would be Speak Like a Child for sheer value of emotion, along with an awesome Beta geek. Out of the stand-alone episodes that don't contribute to the plot, Mushroom Samba is a no-brainer for being so hilarious, but I'd say that Waltz for Venus is an overall more solid episode. I don't have the last DVD and actually haven't seen The Real Folk Blues, but having read spoilers for it I'm guessing that it's amazing.

Ballad of Fallen Angels
It was the first episode to allude to the plot that followed and showcase the true genius of the series. The fight scene at the end got me hooked on the series, and music playing after the window incident matched the mood so well. The closing lines were awesome, too: "Off-key"

Im torn between two episodes. Sympathy for the devil hooked me because that little kid was crazy (not literally) and Pierot Le Fou was just kick @$$.

Definetly Jupiter Jazz Parts 1 and 2. The music in these two episodes in my opinion was the best of the series, especially the song played while jet is in the aircraft. The plot is also great as i'm sure none of us expected to see what we saw with Gren. I was truley shocked which rarely happens when I watcha series. We also got a look into Spike's past and the first episode flowed perfectly right into the second one.

Although Ballad of Fallen Angels is up on the list for me as well for the reasons stated above, I have to stay Asteroid Blues is my favorite. Great introduction to two of the show's main characters, and gives a good sense for what the rest of series is about. Also great hand to hand fight between Asimov and Spike, love the style of the animation and the music, wish they did more with that.
That would be Ballad of Fallen Angels. BTW coldfusion, that "you sing off key" scene was an homage to one of the all time best films IMHO, the classic spaghetti western The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. To anyone who has seen it, spoiler[remember the scene when Tuco nearly killed 'Blondie' in the desert, then tryed to save him in the church by giving him water and 'Blondie' motioned Tuco to come closer?  ]. One of the greatest things that I don't see many mention regarding Bebop is homages to Watanabe's influences that he takes and changes them to fit into the characters and story so well to make them his own.

I don't know the name, but I really like the episode with Rocco, and the stollen plant. It's very cool because it had all the elements that made Cowboy Bebop great: spoiler[Some funny scenes teaching Rocco martial arts, great fight scenes versus the smugglers, and Spike's big heart returning the plant to Rocco's sister.]
It may not be the best, but it's deffinately one of my favorites. |

Well I love the whole damn show, but Wild Horses is my favorite. That scene where Duhan and Myles take-off in that restored Space Shuttle is classic. Too Good Too Bad, the song that plays in the background (Alto and Barry Sax solos
 ) is perfect for the scene. Plus it has "space pirates," who doesn't like pirates!

As soon as they say "YOHOHO HETOOKABITEOFGUMGUM!", I turn off the TV. Luckily that's another show entirely, so Cowboy Bebop mantains awesomeness throughout "Wild Horses". |

just thought i'd say something in this old post sort of re light it.
my favourite bebop episode without a doubt is Ballad of Fallen Angels. its probably the episode with the most background information and the most info about spikes past. it also has a fantastic scene in front of the church glass window which i believe has got to be one of the all time greatest anime moments ever. its soo poetic and the soundtrack is beautiful. soo well done and really shows the underlying style below bebops jazzy up beat cover. so finaly Ballad of Fallen Angels is my fav |

I gotta tell ya, it was hard making a decision, but here's my fav:
Pierrot Le Fou: Mad Pierrot is a one shot villain in this one, but someone I'll never forget. He really gives Spike a run for his money. The origins on this dude are just as scary as he is...

I've found that most people like either Ballad Of Fallen Angels or Pierrot Le Fou. But my favorite episode (and I'm kinda surprised no one's said it yet) is Cowboy Funk. A real cowboy out in space with the exact same personality as Spike. Comic gold. Also how can you not love the episode's ending where spoiler[he becomes Musashi and renames his horse Jinoumaru.] I think it blended a lot of the appeal of Cowboy Bebop (aside from the more serious side of course). It was funny, nice action, well animated, and just like every other episode in the series a masterful musical score.

Wow... A 9 month old topic ressurected, and not deleted...
I don't even remember posting, but now it has changed. Asteroid Blues has become my favorite. the action was awesome, and really well done for a first episode. I almost always deside if I will stick with a series after the first couple of episodes, Cowboy Bebop was a no brainer. The Bruce lee moves, the dog fighting, the shootouts, no wonder ALMOST everyone loves this series. |

I think I'll go with Jupiter Jazz, Part 2--it advances the plot, has excellent music, and features an exciting aerial flight/fight scene, that culminates spoiler[with Gren getting his reveng on Vicious via the exploding music box, which serves as a symbol of their shared past. The musical timing of the music box melody and the explosion on Vicious's ship is very well-done. Gren's death is also moving (especially in the dub) and has him moving on to the next life by returning to the past that he still couldn't let go.] I think Jupiter Jazz Part 2 was one of the first Bebop episodes I ever saw, thanks to my brother recodring it off TV.
Other contenders: Waltz for Venus, a good standalone with an almost magical setting and side characters that you want to care for, which makes the ending of the episode carry more of a punch. Speak Like a Child: mainly because of spoiler[the ending scene that brings important development to the "Faye's Past" story--there's something heartbreaking about that video, even though it's so peppy and upbeat.] |
