Here's a great article on who many consider to be, one of the great mangakas of our time Naoki Urasawa. His books are always in the top 10 sales lists yet he is adored by fans and critics alike. Since we are going to be exposed to him soon enough by starting off with Monster I thought this article would be a good introduction to the man himself for people who haven't heard of him yet. I enjoyed the article because it goes into an analysis of all the works he has done but at the same time the author doesn't go completely nuts over him. Some of Urasawa's shortcomings are laid out along with what makes him so great making it a well-balanced read.

Volume 1 - Oct 4 2005 Volume 2 - Nov 29 2005 Seem like Monster might be getting a Bimonthly release schedule. That would be great news for people waiting on this manga. |

Right Stuf's date for volume 1 lists it at Oct 4 but the July Diamond Previews for September releases has volume 1 in it. So I'm not sure if it's coming out September or October. Anyone know?

Amazon list it at Oct 4th too
Justmanga.com - September 30th Ecampus.com - Oct 4th Campusi.com - Oct 4th Walmart.com - Oct So who knows, maybe it got push back or september 30th. It would be great if Monster got the same treatmeant as Vagabond in term of Size/Paper quality. |

Don't get your hopes up darkhunter. I'm guessing Viz kept Vagabond in the same format out of fear of fan backlash. They haven't done it for anything since then, including editors choice, so I doubt they'll do it for Monster. Sad but true.
But great article. I agree with the author's opinions for the most part, especially his thoughts on 20th. Urasawa is definitally a modern master. Other authors may have deeper and more innovative works, but few people can tell a story as well as Urasawa. |

Isn't sexy voice and robot getting a special 400-page release? I know they change format of all their recent editor's choice title from the bigger size down to the smaller typical GN size. While I'm not really expecting them to handle it with nice paper quality and bigger 8x5 size, it would would be nice though. I'm just really disappointed that 20th Century Boy was put on hiatus. Actually I'm kind of glad that they delayed it. From looking at that cover it looks like they weren't giving it the treatment it deserved. Bare-bones cover and it being put on the action line made me a little worried. I think they delayed it because Viz is going to test the waters first with Monster and if people like Urasawa's stuff they will ramp up the production quality on 20th Century Boys for later on *hopefully*. |

I agree that releasing Monster first is smart. The anime will build up interest in it. By the time they release 20th, they will have already created a fanbase to market to. It sucks that it'll take years to get to the point where I was (might just buy the tanks since they're cheap), but it's alot smarter than trying to put out 20th without the support of Monster fans. |

Well if Naoki Urasawa's work do really well in the states, I would be pretty interested to see if Pluto is brought over. |

Happy is a slightly more dramatic and mature version of Yawara. The author of the article described it as his teen series, and that's a good way to put it. Worth the read and quite enjoyable, but really not as good as his later works or even as funny as Yawara (which is downright hilarious at times). I wouldn't be suprised if Pluto got licenced, though I think it's a bit overrated. It shouldn't have won the Tezuka award over Yuunagi or, from what I've read about it, Histore. Even Nodame Cantable beats it by a long shot in my opinion. But the judges took the obvious choice of today's most popular seinen manga-ka writing a manga based off a work of the God of Manga. It isn't bad by any means; it still mananages to be a often thrilling pot-boiler with some interesting ideas about life, with tons of good ol' Urasawa mind-f!@&s. But it's too close to Monster for my liking, and seems to be a step back from what he accomplished in 20th Century Boys. I'd pick it up if it was released, and I'd even say it's above average, but I'd rather see something like Master Keaton get licenced, even if he only drew it. |
