I don't really know that much about anime except for what I read on here so could someone please tell me if there's certain anime that guys aren't supposed to watch and some that girls aren't supposed to see. And please don't give me never ending lists of hentai I just want to know if there's any anime aimed for only one gender... I can predict that lots of people are going to say to watch whatever I want and that anime is universal blahblah I'm sexist and everything, but I can't really be bothered having a debate on this thread.
I can only think of one that I wouldn't recommend to women and that would be Love Hina , and that's basically hentai. I do like romance every now and then and I do sometimes like girl highschool stories (kinda like Azumanga Daioh, but that's not only for girls is it?)... so anything that is DEFINATELY not for the other sex to see.

Ok so for the most part I only really know of anime that only girls should watch... the first is Sailor Moon (not sailor moon S-Stars which has a lot of fan service): the story of freindship and how to look pretty and change into scantally clad sailor girl uniform. The second one is Cardcaptors Sakura elementary school girl who dresses up in pretty costumes and has a pet teddy bear that follows her everywhere and a costume summery at the end. For the girls I would not recomend Burn up W/Excess although it contains many girl heroics it is based purly to entertain guys with a tonne of Fan service. The next one I would not recomend for girls is Now and Then: Hear and There. I am a decensitised guy but this anime almost made me cry for most girls this is not the most feel good anime of the year and should be avoided by anyone emotional. That is my on the sper list of anime that I think girls and guys should not watch I will prolly kick myself for half of the stuff I wrote here later on.

Gee, your perv threshold must be very low Wink Love Hina may be a little ecchi in places, but it's certainly not anywhere near hentai.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars has a lot of fanservice? I guess I must have missed it...I didn't see any. Anime smile + sweatdrop What fansevice are you talking about, exactly?

I'll just say right now, you are going to get a lot of people mad at you with this thread. There are many anime aimed at males, and many anime aimed at females, but that doesn't mean the other sex can't or shouldn't watch and enjoy anime that isn't aimed at them. I personally enjoyed Now and Then, Here and There, and I'm female. And there are plenty of guys who enjoyed Cardcaptor Sakura, even though it's aimed at girls (most of them just won't admit it Wink)
To say that in more general terms: I've enjoyed tons of shounen, even though it's technically made for guys, and I know there are lots of guys that like shoujo, too.

Bottom line, there is no such thing as an anime that a girl shouldn't watch, and there is not such thing as an anime a guy shouldn't watch, either. That's just idiotic.

Since you're new to the genre, I suggest you read ANN's Lexicon to familiarize yourself with the terms used for anime and manga. It will give you a better understanding of the genre, and you won't be lost when these terms are used.

If you are speaking of inclinations and demographic, then I suppose it could be said that there are indeed certain series that are expected to be watched based on gender.

Most guys aren't expected to watch shounen-ai or yaoi. Most women aren't expected to watch harem series. Even so, you will find men and women who will watch both. Of course, it's not just limited to those genres. You can find that there are people who will watch just about anything.

Pythos made an excellent suggestion as well in terms of the lexicon, I heartily second that motion.

As it has been stated, Love Hina is clearly *not* a hentai series. Moreover, I can find worse than that. (It's sad that I can say this.) I suggest looking around more, and you will realize that Love Hina doesn't come close to being something women shouldn't watch.

This whole post is almost alien. Is any anime gender specific? So, if I put Love Hina-Mahoromatic-Tenchi Muyo-Hand Maid May-Girls Bravo-Ai Yori Aoshi-Mezzo-wait...anything with fan service, into the DVD player, I've suddenly entered a male only zone. This screen name is shared by my husband and me. I can without sputter say that anime enjoyment doesn't have special underpants.

Hey don't get me wrong I've shown my friend Love Hina, and she found it so much better than I did.. the main reason I'm posting this thread is because i just want to see if there's anime series that people have watched and didn't like because they thought it was aimed at the opposite sex. To be honest I don't really want to go out and buy a dvd that i will find soppy and lame. Although I haven't seen... or heard of for that matter, anime that's aimed at only women I just don't want to buy anything that's an exaggurated version of something like FMP Fumoffu (cos i found that ridiculously lame and thought it was the girl edition to FMP....even though i did like it in some parts).
So maybe I should try and rephrase: Has anybody seen an anime that they didn't like because it was too manly, or too girly... i hate talking like a grade one teacher. And also I think I'll just say now, that I'm not going to dislike an anime series just because it's categorized in the opposite gender column... i've hated lots of anime of all different genres from harem to full-on mecha/samurai action.

I understand you "hate talking like a grade one teacher" but please, quit generalizing like grade one STUDENT. I still don't understand what the hell this post is all about. Gravitation, Utena, Fruits Basket, Hana Yori Dango, Alien 9, CCS, etc. Shojo/Shonen,Yuri/Yaoi...I've never known anyone who watched anime on such flimsy rails. Some mecha sucks, some romance falters...categories are only useful to house plants.

I just read my own post, and realize that maybe I came across as a jerk. The clear version of what I was trying to say is...anime isn't gender specific. For every Aika or Najica my husband has coaxed me into watching, I have a quiver of Saiyuki, Fushigi Yuugi, Pretear, etc.
You know what? I laugh at panty shots and my husband sniffles at romantic scenes. Where's the gender specifics?

Have you ever watched Fruits Basket? Your avatar looks like Kyo from the show. The series is definitely aimed at girls, but my younger brother didn't seem to believe me because he himself liked the anime. It's basically a "harem" anime for girls. I'm assuming that you're a guy, so you shouldn't watch Fruits Basket if you haven't already. My brother is weird for liking it. Wink
Also stay away from series such as Gravitation and Loveless.

I guess any series with excessive fan-service aimed towards guys shouldn't be watched by females. Any series that has something to do with maids is a good example. Something like He is my Master should be avoided by the girls.

Azumanga Daioh's target audience in Japan are guys, but in the U.S. the anime is supposedly marketed towards girls.

I'm actually not a very close-minded person myself and will watch any anime that is good no matter the target audience.

I dont believe that theres animes that are pointed for a certeain gender that the other sex "can't/shouldn't"m watch.
I mean if you can tell I LOVE LOVE HINA!!!!!!! Panty shots, "accidents", getting fu*ked up, and being surrounded by hot chicks and not knowing what to do is halarious and somewhat romantic at some moments... AND IM A GIRL! ....I was seriously obssesed with that anime Laughing
Another anime and manga I love to watch/read is Ichigo 100%. And thats what I believe is a harem anime supposeivly pointed for guys. But I got my brothers and my girl friends into both! And no, I'm not a lesbian or whatever, if thats what your thinking.
I also like Ichigo and LH for its 'romantic' ( i guess you can say some scenes are dramatic... Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop ). I was totaly under Sailor moon and Tuxedo mask's love story when I was like 6-10.....
I read Fruits Basket as much as I can and its turning real good, and my borther read the first volume and he liked it. I EVEN GOT HIM INTO MARS! ( good thing he doesnt go on forums Laughing )
And Im totaly into action. I like Samurai Deeper Kyo, Samurai Champloo, Blade of the Immortal, Bleach. I also like Naruto..but SaMuRaIs ROCK!...
OH! And I dont like mecha animes, nope hate it. If the only way to save my life (if there is ever a situation like this) was to watch Gundum and then get tested, I would die. I probobly had fallen asleep throught the 3rd episode ( I like to give aniems a shot.)

I agree with some previous posters--I think Love Hina can be pretty romantic at times, and even though I'm a guy, I like it more for the romance than the fanservice. I might be biased, because I watch all kinds of anime (aside from yaoi and shounen-ai), even the heavily shoujo/girly stuff. I don't really think there are shows that guys or girls "shouldn't" watch; one could make an argument that girls shouldn't watch Evangelion because it has a lot of fanservice for the guys, giant mecha battles, no attractive bishounen like in Pretear/Fruits Basket/anything Yuu Watase, and the male lead is by most respects a wimp. (Sorry if I'm overgeneralizing this; I haven't seen very much of Eva myself.) However, if girls didn't watch it based on those criteria, they'd miss out on all the other stuff that the series has to offer. Aside from series with yaoi/yuri/strongly pornographic content, I think any show will appeal to guys and girls, since there are guys like me that like the cutesy romantic shoujo shows and girls that like action/gore/giant robots.
