good review as always...but for one thing on the your Jyojyoushi review why in the heck did you say your jaw droped for the P'UNK~en~Ciel version of Heaven's Drive I thought it was quite good.

You DO realise that people saying their jaw dropped can be a very good thing, as well as a very bad thing, right? |

Sorry--that was way too ambiguous. I meant that the four of them can switch instruments and still sound awesome.

I pre-ordered mine from DDD, and it still hasn't been shipped yet.
Worst case scenario, I cancel the order with them and get it somewhere else. I've been looking forward to it for months now. |

So you can't just buy the DVD from anywhere?...

Sure you can--here's the page in our release database. And since Red is handling distribution, you should see it quite a few retail stores, too. |

I find the review really ambiguious. Although the conclusion is that the DVD is a must-buy, the actual review before the conclusion seems to be saying that the DVD should rate a C-. The same with the review of single introduced at the end of the review.
P.S. I love the Otakon DVD as well as Joujoushi. If I were new to L'arc though, I would probably skip the whole review together and deem L'arc's DVD not worth buying at the third paragraph of the review. |

I thought the explanation was quite clear:
It's L'Arc, it's a big milestone for J-Pop in America, and it's good enough. Performance-wise, "C" grade sounds about right. I firmly believe there's enough good stuff to warrant a purchase, but that's why I wrote 1200 words instead of 200--there are a lot of factors to weigh.
Nonsense. There's a big "Tune In" at the top of the review and an early argument (3rd paragraph, ironically) that's among the strongest I have ever written for the column. |

How many people (and I mean fans new to L'arc, as I have said in my last post) would want to buy a DVD because it marks some supposed historical moment of J-pop in America, when its music is nothing to brag about? Perhaps it's just that the big "tune in" as you called it, does not appear to be a "tune in" to me after all. That's why I find your review ambiguious. |

Dunno. A lot, I hope, but that doesn't change the reality that it was a big step for J-Pop, or that Hyde didn't always step up to the occasion.
What I said about P'unk~en~Ciel (see top of thread) was ambiguous; you can take jaw-dropping two different ways. Giving a bunch of pros and cons, on the other hand, does not make something ambiguous. It says here is what I think is important, and here is how I feel about it, but I trust you to make up your own mind. |

Damn it sounds like Hyde had a hard time. It's annoying when you go to a concert and the singer sounds like crap, but then again if your nuts about the band, you usually don't even notice while you're going deaf next to a giant speaker.
Does anyone know if they were questioned on their impression of an American audience? From what I hear of other bands touring, audiences around the world are completly different. One of my favourite quotes by a band on a Japanese audience is "Basically, out of all the places we've been to, Europe is the craziest. They have areas for 13 year old girls to puke after getting drunk off their ass in the crowds. But Japan is different. They have drunk people in the crowds, but they're just the Americans who somehow stumbled into the concert. The Japanese fans are great though, and extremely generous. Not to mention shy." Also, another question. Was there any moshing or crowd surfing at this concert? I think I'm going to have to buy this dvd just for kicks. |

I was there. I own the Japanese version of the release. I have watched this dvd many times. I have to say I do not agree with your review. It is incredibly impartial. The whole tone is so sarcastic. I don't understand if I'm supposed to buy the dvd or hate hyde.
To me, the whole review read like this: "Hyde's vocals sucked so bad that he ruined everything.. and if he did manage to sing on key, it was a miracle. but that doesn't matter because you should buy the dvd anyways for it's historical value." Have you NEVER been to a LIVE concert before? Live recordings always miss something in the transition. Hyde really did sound a helluva lot better live than in the dvd. It's not the audience's imagination. It's not like the concert was professionally recorded on fantastic mikes and steady cams. The whole thing was recorded on a digital handcam. The dvd was never meant to be released. If you did ANY research instead of immediately mouthing off at Hyde's vocals, You would know that. It is the whole reason it is done so documentary-style. It is probably the whole reason Hyde sounds like he's "slurring." btw... Hyde sounds no where near as bad as you make him out to sound. And why the hell would ANY NEW FAN want to buy a $20 DVD for its historic value if it's a shitty concert? A couple of mistakes. You said that Tetsu threw his bass down...which he didn't. Ken threw his guitar down because the stupid thing stopped working during his solo. Not that I expect anyone who wasn't there to notice but the A-ok that Hyde supposedly gave to the audience was really to his fans in the front who were holding up part of the lyrics that he always forgets. He was more like saying "ok I got it. you can put the signs down now." It's not shown very clearly or for very long but the fans in the front row do start to put away a very large, long sheet of paper. And why would L'arc know that they have such a large following outside of Japan? It's not like they get figures and statistics. I've been to plenty of live concerts, but that's irrelevant. I don't doubt that Hyde sounded better in person, but when you're watching it on DVD, that's also irrelevant. And I know that the concert was not made for DVD release, but when you're trying to decide whether or not to buy, that is irrelevant.
I don't make excuses, I write reviews. |

I’ve become a fan of L'Arc~en~Ciel after listening to the 2 US release CDs. I listened to the CD close to a thousand times already. But when I got the Tofu record’s screener DVD, I was quite disappointed. I’m not trying to be mean or anything but come on~ I was getting embarrassed just watching the concert on TV. I think I’ll just stick to the CDs where they probably sang verse by verse and digitally mix’em up.
