*yawn* This is old stuff, i came up with it years ago. :)
as a kid, my theory of the universe was that it was, for all intents and purposes, something like a 4d sphere. in effect, you could travel in any given direction and (without varying your direction) end up back at exactly the same place where you started. this included "up", "down" and "through". anyway, throw in basic quantum theory and you have an infinitely thin stack of self-contained 'infinite' universes in a singular space... ... and presto! it's more or less their Level 3 Multiverse theory. what's interesting is that this theory does, in fact, allow for variance in the supposed laws of the universe -- that is, that gravity is not necessarily a constant, nor does it need to be the same in the other universes as those in ours. as such, there may be a way to scientifically explain (via different constants than our own universe) how people can survive enormous falls, swing swords as fast as light, and such. of course, now all we need is a quantum drive so we can get 'there' before all the universes run out of fuel and turn everything into the virtual remainints of a once universe-sized black holes. :) (this is, naturally, allowing for the fact that there's actually a very limited range of universes that would support any form of life; far more would either be overdosed with radiation, or filled with matter but no chain reactions that would allow stars to ignite, etc.) |

Well, not exactly. The current inflationary universe theory allows for multiple universes, but they don't occupy the same 4-dimensional space like the simplest sci-fi model. Instead, each universe is a "bubble" of normal space in a much more vast area of "inflationary" space, which is expanding at an exponential rate. In other words, the other universes aren't really "parallel", rather, they're just impossibly far away. ("Impossible" in the sense that it's impossible to get there or observe them.) I'd recommend The Inflationary Universe by Alan Guth if you truly want to understand the concept. ------RM |

I believe some sort of world record for nerdiness has been broken: Talking about astrophysics (or whatever the heck this is; I'm a film student, don't ask me) on an anime board.
It's almost as nerdy as this tee-shirt I saw once: the guy had a white, obviously Kinko's-made shirt with a picture from Zero Wing and the words: "Canyon Del Oro High School Calculus 2001: All Your Intergal Are Belong To Us!" Christ, man. -Zac |

Yes, all very interesting, BUT...
In these parallel universes, is everyone evil and wearing goatees? |

Yes, they're called Coffee Houses and they intrude upon our happy little reality from time to time.

Goatees? I'm more scared of the fat ones with the eyebrows pointed inward and very small eyes. |
