I've Visted the japanese jump and it looks so much better than the US one, Mainly the covers, How come our covers are so plain while the japanese one has so much things happening like a ton of characters on one cover, and they don't just show the same character on every cover*Cough*Yugioh*Cough* I mean give Luffy, Naruto and others some time and start using back the paper you were using when you started not the cheap news paper, paper that your using now USA jump sucks!

Actually, the Japanese Jump uses much, much cheaper paper than the US version. Of course, that only brings the price down, which is the important part.

OMG! You mean a the Japnese Shonene Jump, which has been around for longer than I've been alive (I'm 21) in a country where manga is read by almost everyone, is better than the US Shonen Jump, which has been around for 2 1/2 years in a country where manga is an incredibly small niche market?
I didn't see that coming at all. |

OMG Shadow guyver Dude! Wouldn't you think that if you were to make a copy of the JP Magazine you'd make it the same way or tens times better to gain more eyes! Think about. I mean yes JP shonen has been around for along time but at the same time if your gonna make a copy cat of it way not make a damn good one? It just seems as if they're flat with the US one! and guyver don't you ever try to make me look stupid Koodles! I crack myself up all the time I love you Guyver even though I just typed with ya! |

Yeah, sorry about that Laruto, I was in a bad mood at the time.
But really, we should be happy we even have anything like it. Could they do a better job? Oh yeah. But give them time, man. It's still just an experiment. If SJ does really well, they'll probably try other experiments in the mag. We'll just have to see. Hopefully, things will get better. |

I really don't see how cramming the cover with as much crap as possible makes it look better. And the only reason Yugioh is on the cover every month is to attract new readers who are into the card game/TV show. As long as Yugioh is the property with the biggest mainstream appeal, it's probobly going to get on the cover. I haven't read SJ since its first year of publication, but like shadow_guyver said, I doubt the paper quality is as low as its Japanese counterpart.

Eh most people buying jump are probalby the Yugioh fanboy since there was a yugioh craze in the U.S. that was said to be bigger than pokemon. If it sales, than that's what they're going to do.
Keeping the price down mean using really cheap paper. The paper quality in the japanese sj is really crap though, it makes me not want to read it at all, so I wouldn't complain much about the US jump. Would you want to pay 5 dollar or 15 dollar for a jump with good paper? Moms will likely buy thier kids shonen jump if it was 5 dollar. That's how business are usually run. |

The funny thing about it is though that because some parents view comics as things for very little kids it spreads on to the children and they don't pick it up because it is a comic series.
Here is an example of what a kid said after looking at a Shonen Jump: "Hey Yu-gi-oh!" "Oh wait... its just comics. What kind of retard reads comics?" This might not be the whole market but it represents a significant number. |

Are you sure you really know kids that well? Did you study these kids behavior in one of your psychology class? The fact that Yugioh is a craze not because it's just an anime but because spread to cards, videogames, action figure, where kids and young teen eat it up no matter what. That's just more reason to put Yugioh and Goku on the cover for recognition. Something that kids are familar with. That and my little cousin who's a yugioh craze, just want his parent to buy it for him and even though he doesn't read it now, he just wanted it at the store at that time. And also the fact that most people reading comics (and started reading comic) are kids and young teen also. Last edited by darkhunter on Sun Apr 24, 2005 5:02 pm; edited 2 times in total |

They are marketing Shonen Jump towards children and Yu-gi-oh is probably the most recognizable figure from Shonen Jump besides someone from DBZ so naturally good marketing strategies indicate that putting Yu-Gi-Oh on the cover more frequently will lead more children to check it out. |

I'll just add my two cents and say I agree with Laruto. I like the Japanese covers better and really dislike the American covers. I think presestation is really important and when it comes to covers of magazines, manga, or video games; the Japanese covers are usually better. Suikoden anyone?

I thought Death Note had a really cool cover when I looked at it in Borders. It's got the cover art on the slip on but if you take it off the cover's a death note. (Black w/ the white writing on it.)
