Funny that Beck and "Humanoid Monster Bem" ranked together. I remember the anime having a song called "Yokai Ningen Bem"
Conan's rating sure was high... wonder what was going on in the episode o_o |

The Next Conan's Hint for that episode is "Puffed Rice Maker", so I have no idea what it could be that made the episode's ratings so high. o.o

Curious George: once again proving that American animation is excellent.

Don't forget that a rating also depends on what airs on the others channels simultaneously (if a very strong program airs on another channel, the rating will probably decrease and vice-versa) and also what aired on NTV right before Conan. The content of the show itself doesn't necessarily explain the increase. Oh, I looked it up, and apparently it was filler. |

Conan episode was the first part of a two parter. Still in fillers, so nothing too memorable, though I suspect 2 parters do better than stand alones.

Two things to keep in mind is that the rating system does not take into account DVRs (the primary method of watching anime) and it only counts households that volunteer for the rating system. There is a device that participating families switch on when watching TV in the living room. I don't know if it counts other TVs. The general rating system is terrible for measuring anime popularity.

It's a hell of a lot better than Nielsen, that's for sure.

I also agree about Conan's ratings being up a bit. Maybe the show it was on against was really bad that week. Also the Conan fillers have been ranking usually high from what i understand.

As far as I'm aware Nielsen pretty much uses the same method(s)... |

It is more or less the same as Nielsen. They're flawed, awful, and inaccurate systems... but they're pretty much the best you can actually do.

As far as it has been explained in this thread, in Japan you can volunteer to be counted in with the ratings. With Nielsen, they pick people arbitrarily. |

Some cable systems proposed a ratings counter built-in the cable boxes so it's more accurate due to bigger samples, but a lot of people didn't like the invasion of privacy, so it's never implemented.
Well, it's supposed to be a random sample. Ya don't want a certain demographics stuffing the ballot, like tech aficionados or fans of certain shows. |

I used to routinely post animation television ratings in Japan at the Anime**** forums several years ago, but I stopped doing so a few years ago. Others since have taken my place and are posting them there regularly.
(You can google me with "anime tv ratings" and find some of what I posted back then.) From what I recall, the only animated TV series that was broadcasted over the air in all 47 prefectures of Japan was Sazae-san. (I think Pokémon or something else was next with 46 out of 47.) On the other hand, niche anime TV series (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, K-ON!, Lucky Star, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, etc.) were broadcasted over the air in only a handful of prefectures - mostly in the Kantou and Kansai regions (Tokyo, Saitama Prefecture, Chiba Prefecture, Kanagawa Prefecture, Osaka, Kyoto, Hyougo Prefecture, etc.), plus in outlying regions (Chuubu region, Touhoku region, Hokkaido, Hiroshima Prefecture, etc.) located sporadically across Japan - and usually late at night. I cannot recall which Japanese prefecture had the fewest OTA (over the air) animated TV series per year - I think it had like three or fewer - but Okinawa, among a number of others, also ranked very low in the number of OTA animated TV series per year. Contrast that with the highest ranking Japanese prefectures, if I recall correctly, all located in the Kantou and Kansai regions, which numbered over ninety or one hundred OTA animated TV series per year. One can, however, watch niche anime TV series throughout Japan from other sources, such as satellite TV stations (AT-X, BS-i, BS-TBS, etc.) and the Internet. One can also buy and rent anime DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, and watch them that way. |
