I think this review hits the nail on the head for the volume. Though I haven't bought the DVD yet, I remember which eps these were, and I agree with the assesments.
Shipon/Shima IS a crybaby, big time. It's even admitted in the show around ep 16 (or around there. don't quote me on the ep #) that's aptly named "Hotheaded Crybaby". And it is one of her more irritating points. However, I think it makes her a better overall character, as it painfully points out that for all her actual skill, brains, and kindness, she's just a normal teen, in that she doesn't see much of the good in herself, but instead sees her flaws and thinks that that's what she is. And we see her try and get over her insecurity, and see her do what most real people do alot of in life: backslide into their faults. So while it can get annoying, it also brings with it some flair and refreshing feeling to the show. Excellent review. I know that the reviews for the next volumes will be good, as the story only gets better and in many ways the overall situation gets way more intense. And it's all for the good  .

I don't know if it is a coincidence or not, but Shipon does look and act like another famous crybaby in anime - Usagi Tsukino, a.k.a Sailor Moon.
I also agree that Carlo's review was dead-on; however, I more agree with what Bamboo wrote in her review of Stellvia 3 in that the Great Mission storyline ended too quickly. I felt that Tatsuo Sato and the other scriptwriters should have used at least a couple of more episodes to wrap up the story; I felt that they rushed in getting the first storyarc done so they can concentrate on the character developments in the later episodes. Not that it's a bad thing; as I mentioned in the last Shelf Life thread, I love the direction that Sato is taking in developing Shipon's character and her relationships with Arisa, Kouta, and in this volume, Rinna. I also like the fact that the jar of rock candy that Shipon's family gave her is being used as a symbol of Shipon's insecure personality. And to Sir_Brass: Thank you very much for getting me into this awesome series. I love all of the characters and their developing relationships. I can't wait to see what happens to Shipon and the others. You definitly have good taste, my friend!

The thing is that the Great Mission needed to be wrapped up as early as it did. If you think about it, the Great Mission was what the generations beforehand had to face, and this generation (Shima/Shipon's generation) was only destined to complete it. They still have their own trials to face. So, the Great Mission can be seen as a bridge between the generations that was being crossed as the story started. It is not the focus of the series, however. That problem will come along quite quickly, and there will be more character development to go with it. Let's just say that Hydrus Beta hasn't finished with the Solar System just yet
. You'll see why the Great Mission story arc ended so early. But don't despair, the next arc makes the Great Mission look like a gust of wind .
