Damn. This was perfect for me until it said I had to live in Montreal. I suppose Minnesota's not nearly close enough...
But I CAN read in French, dammit! |

It's getting difficult to get the companies to send screeners to multiple different locations. So unfortunately I'm going to start limiting reviewers to a few geographic areas, around the existing staff who are sent screeners. Establishing screener "libraries" of sorts. Also, Montreal is well suited for the manga reviewer, because we have a large ammount of french manga imported from France that is available long before it is available in English. -t |

I could understand wanting to limit reviewers to geographic areas...but, since this is for mangas, what do you mean by screeners? Does the company sends you the manga and you review it? Technically, wouldn't it be easier to buy the mangas yourself and submit a review? I would like to apply for this job...but unfortunately, i live in Toronto. However, I still don't understand what the trouble is with screeners. I may purchase a lot of mangas...but that does not mean i like every single vol I buy. Although I may finish a series by purchasing all the volumes, it's obvious how some volumes are weak while some are very strong. I just wanted to get this out of my chest.

A screener is a sample copy of a DVD/book/video game/whatever that is sent out by the company to a reviewer ahead of the release date. They're usually identical to the final release except for some minor differences like maybe there's different ads in the back. Oh, and if they're anything like movie screeners (which I'm more familar with) they have "Sample Copy-Not For Sale or Rent" plastered all over them. Both publishers and the press prefer to use screeners because that way the review can be written and ready to be published just as the product comes out-if a reviewer waits and buys the manga themself, the review may not appear for a couple of months after the manga was released, which makes the magazine look like it's outdated and means the publisher won't have a (hopefully positive) review to drive up hype for the new manga. It's a shame about only Montreal residents being able to apply (I was so excited when I read the headline too) but it's perfectly understandable why it has to be that way. Hopefully one of those screener libraries will end up close to me...^^ |

I'm a bit disappointed it's limited to Montrealians (or Montrealites, or whichever you call 'em) because I've contributed several reviews to the site in the past and was hoping this would be a chance to get on board fully.

Ah, it hurts! Canadians exclusively reviewing our manga? What has the world come to?
I do understand about not taking reviewers not close to you due to companies not sending out to various locations (even though I can read French... *grumble*), but I can still be sad. |

I buy more manga in French than I do in English even though I'm anglophone.
I find there's a better variety of manga in French (they have more English manga at Chapters now, but it's mostly mediocre-quality shounen and shoujo), the French versions of manga titles are usually far ahead of the English versions (like how each new volume Ah! My Goddess gets translated into French just a couple of months after the tankubon appears in Japan), there are still some things available in French that have never been available in English (all 18 volumes of the Kimagure Orange Road manga released in just 18 months between 1998 and 1999), and, sometimes, like with Planetes or Wish, the printing quality is much better in French (and you get the dustcover). |

I have a question so that I don't bother writing a review if it's negative... Why is the manga knowledge necessary? I've only been in anime for about 4 years... I have read some manga but my knowledge of it is sadly lacking (although I grew up on BDs, maybe that count?  ).
I'm bilingual (French/English... Japanese = zilch, except for the most usual words one grasp from watching hours of anime), have a simple writing style, love reading AND live on the south shore... Is the "not much manga knowledge" going to kill any chance I could have and should just not bother? |
