The Fair is sponsored by the Tokyo International Anime Fair Executive Committee (Executive Chairman Shintaro Ishihara, Governor of Tokyo), which was established by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and anime-related industries to promote animated film-related businesses. Approximately 60% of all anime products enjoyed by children around the world are produced in Japan, with roughly 70% of all such Japanese products created in Tokyo. Each year, approximately 30 animated films are produced for domestic theater release, and over 2,500 animated TV series are broadcast in Japan. The total value of anime product exports is approximately 500 billion yen, accounting for 65% of Japan?s total image and graphics-related product exports of 760 billion yen. Japan?s domestic market for anime products, including sales of products such as anime character goods, is estimated to be a \1,000 billion industry. ?Japan boasts roughly 300 domestic companies producing animated films, over 210 of which are located in Tokyo. These companies are actively creating anime products while maintaining close links with surrounding contents industries. --- (page break) --- Tokyo International Anime Fair 2003 The Tokyo International Anime Fair is an animated cartoon fair held to promote animated film-related industries, based on four concepts. By holding an international trade fair, a competition and various events in Tokyo, where much of Japan?s animated cartoon industry is concentrated, the Fair provides a venue for international business discussions and promotes further development of anime-related industries. Tokyo International Anime Fair 2003 will be the unparalleled world capital of animation, bringing together under one roof the leading anime-related industries from Japan, Asia and around the world. Competition This year's Fair will accept competition entries from any country, helping to foster anime creative talent around the world. (Submissions to the juried competition for the previous Tokyo International Anime Fair 21 were limited to Japan.) Japan's anime professionals will provide active support to parties submitting entries to the competition to help them grow to professional status. Events Tokyo International Anime Fair 2003 is planning multiple screenings of prized TV and film productions scheduled for public airing during the spring and summer of 2003. The Fair is also planning to hold sessions with around five renowned animated film directors. The goal is to create an exhibition that incorporates the possibilities for anime in an era of diversified media mix, by showcasing products and services of firms in diverse fields, including the Internet and broadband, centered on anime-related industries such as animated film production companies, television and movie companies, publishing firms, toy manufacturers and advertising agencies. The Fair also aspires to be a locale in which participants can present their ideas on the possibilities for how anime products can be presented to help people enjoy richer lives through the use of the most up-to-date image representations and technology. Tokyo International Anime Fair 21, held in February 2002, was host to 104 companies, including 76 domestic companies and 28 companies from overseas. (2 pics) (Views of the February 2002 trade fair) --- (page break) --- Competition To discover the young creative stars who will lead the anime industry of tomorrow, the Fair has established an Open Entry Division (Juried Competition) that seeks to cultivate new legions of talent. The Fair will display all of the productions submitted for the competition, including the prizewinners and other entries, through a program of activities designed to make the industry familiar with the entries and their creators. The prizewinning production and other entries will also be shown at a site in the Fair hall. Terms and Conditions for Application Work to be submitted for the public competition must meet the following conditions. 1) Work composition: Each frame of the produced work must be created by the applicant. However, this includes computer-generated work. 2) Medium: The work should be submitted in the form of a video tape, CD-ROM, DVD or 35mm film reel. 2. Application Requirements 1) Eligibility for application: All nationalities, ages, individuals or groups (including corporations), professionals and amateurs are eligible for entry. 2) Copyrights: The materials used in the work (including sound) are limited to that for which the applicant has obtained all necessary and proper rights for use. 3. Award Categories 1) Animation category: Must be a single complete stand-alone production. 2) Pilot category: Must be a pilot production for a long animated feature film or series (the work itself does not have to be a complete production). 3) Interactive media category: Works must be suited for interactive media such as TV games, Websites or mobile phones. 4) Student category: Works created by students who are currently enrolled in specialized animation schools, high schools or universities should enter this category. 4. How to Apply 1) Application to enter the competition ? As a rule, the application for entry to the competition should be done via the Internet ? One application per work to be submitted is required ? There is no fee for entering the competition 2) Sending of work: Please attach an outline and description to each work sent that clearly indicates what it is. 3) Mailing address: Secretariat of the Tokyo International Anime Fair 2003 Executive Committee 4) Work acceptance period: Works should reach the Secretariat between Friday, November 1, 2002 and Monday, January 6, 2003. --- (page break) --- Events 12 To ensure that both industry-related participants and anime fans from Japan and around the world visit and enjoy the trade fair, Tokyo International Anime Fair 2003 will sponsor a variety of ongoing events.
