Hello. Im a new registered user on ANN and i enjoy to draw Manga. i was just wondering who else likes to draw Manga as well. Pretty self explainitory.
 And please be specific about your passion to sketch this form of art.  Do you enjoy just the basic sketch work, or do you go all out with ink, water colors, and or other forms of drawing texturing to enhance your work of art? Please get back to me on this, if it hasn't been asked before. And if it has simply direct me to that topic.

I enjoy (and am much better at) drawing and designing characters than I am at writing manga. I actually am working on a manga, just for fun really as many people would probably find it really bad
 . I have lots of story ideas but writing them out and merging them with artwork is proving to be extremely difficult! Also I'm not skilled at drawing scenery or settings so most of my story is really great looking characters in white space or in a shoddy looking room. I don't work on it very often anymore, but I get inspired when I read a manga with really good artwork or storylines. When I read Mars the artwork blew me away; especially the realistic movement and design of the characters.
I really tend to focus on the characters and relationships so I'm trying to make that work with my inability to draw backgrounds. I like to mix up really detailed pencil drawings with rough sketches to make it more interesting. Some of my pages look really great when I do this, but its a big effort. I haven't gone so far as to really clean anything up or ink it yet. I think I have to work on my storytelling before I'll be confident enough to show it to anyone. So what about you? You didn't mention anything in your post about what you're working on.

I have a few great ideas for a manga series but I still need to practice drawing characters and stuff. I have trouble drawing the human body so I'm planning to take life composition classes to improve. Hopefully I'll improve a lot this year so I could start on my manga series. I can't wait!

I enjoy drawing illustrations a lot, but not really manga. I know that I have no future in a manga career, for one, and I find it much easier to find freelance jobs that hire illustrators as opposed to manga artists (not that I'm either one, really... I'm technically an animator). But drawing manga-style characters is a passion of mine, and I have been blessed enough to have had the opportunity to frequently take advantage of that passion with work.
As far as technique goes, I usually start with 4 or 5 thumbnails and then pick (or let the client pick) whichever one has the best composition, movement, etc. Then I'll do a rough rendering at the final size on cheap paper, then trace over it on my light table with final pencils (usually a .3mm or .5mm lead) onto two-ply Bristol. I never use ink. Then I scan the final image and use Photoshop and my Wycom tablet to color. I keep meaning to make a website with my published work posted on it, but alas... procrastination is a deadly syndrome in my family. :) |

Thank you all for contributing some meat to this topic. I was begininning to think no one considers drawing. I believe you all have some talent that will definately generate even more intriguing and complex mangas to come. I apologize if that seems like a general statement, it's not shallow by any means. Anyway, if any of you are interested, i just made a blog dedicated to anime and manga. So we could establish a more in depth conversation about drawing manga if you'd like. I hope this can become a great tool to allow us to share some ideas (we should keep some to ourselves to protect future ideas), and expand a skill of manga. I've some great resources but i cant quite use them through this site, and it would be time consuming if i did. so if anyone is interested please check it out, i need people to put some meat on my site!
As for me and my manga? Well i've been drawing western style artwork for several years (specifically realistic landscapes, and human portraits), i had some friends who sketched Marvel-type comics, so i thought it would be interesting to take up a different aspect of drawing and a different form of comics. Manga hit me like a Golden Child. i fell in love with the scenery used, character sketches, and the whole aspect of the Japanese form of manga as a whole just interested me. I started sketches of known characters such as basic pokemons to InuYasha, to Ghost in the Shell. i have yet to come up with a solid storyline though. im still sketching up to pens but i wont ink unless i find a character design of my own that i like and a storyline that is bold and new. its going to take some research but im thinking of basing some of my material on Traditional Okinawan styles of martial arts. |

To respond to this quote i would have to say it depends. Most mangas do you use groups of people now to colaborate on one or numerouse stories at a time. but for small series can be done by one or only a few people. an ARTIST can pump out alot of sketches and as long as those are usable works of art then his/her project can be accomplished quite easily alone. A comic can be done by one person if need be. its just a matter of how large the project is. I was approached by Tokyopop's Jeremy Ney, but I had to decline the job because of my other work. :( But that's a wonderful outlet for others who want to become manga artists. The people at Tokyopop are very nice; you should never be afraid to approach them if you see them at a con or something. And speaking of, conventions are great places to get your work looked at. Tokyopop (along with all the major US comic companies) does portfolio reviews at most of the major comic cons and will have many helpful suggestions for your artwork--even if you're not really interested in drawing sequential art pages. And if you can afford it, renting out a space to display work at a comic con can build you a very decent street rep. and following. Small, but enough to make you feel like it's all worthwhile. :) Don't give up (everyone)! Work hard and one day you'll get somewhere. |

WHo doesnt? Yes but I draw less often now because I am way more interested in guitar playing but thats just me. I never entered the contest although I have a stack of unfinished mangas that I was going to enter.

I love to draw manga! but since i just recently started reading it i havn't quite gotten the style down. I found that the best way to figure out the style is too just look at the pictures in the books and redraw them, i found that i am actually fairly good at tdoing this. i hope to someday figure out how to draw it without having ot look at something. maybe then i'll make a website or something but until then i'll jsut keep drawing from the books.
