Ooh. That's a toughie. I like both of them a lot. If you're looking for knitty-gritty guerilla warfare, go with 08th MS Team. It actually takes place on the earth, instead of outer space or on some colony or something, and I find it to be a pretty entertaining series with some decent characters.
0083 is also good, but is more drama-oriented, what with a main character being such a fickle person. The bad guy also adds an interesting aspect since he's one of those "villains fighting for a cause" kind of guys. But as I mentioned the main character being a bit fickle, he's about the only drawback to the series, though that's only because I think his dub voice is a little annoying, which is ironic because he (Steve Cannon) also plays the hero in 08th Ms Team, but I feel he did a much better job in that one.
You can't really go wrong with either of them, but I'd probably choose 0083.

I would go with 0083. I liked the drama, and I personally didn't like 8th MS Team, some things about it just didn't allow me to like it. My opinion is to go with 0083.

For ground based warfare, I say 08th MS Team
For space warfare, 0083
Which has better romance? 08th MS Team
Better theme on patriotism: 0083
I say it depends on your tastes of what you look for in a Gundam series.

If you want proper Gundam Canon, follow this:
Gundam Canon -> MSG (also known as 0079) -> 08th MS -> 0080 -> 0083 -> Zeta -> ZZ -> CCA -> F91 -> V (ZZ and V are not licensed)

I liked 0080 and 08th MS, but didn't care for 0083.
So if you agreed with me once, maybe you'll agree with me again

Both are great series and should be seen but I recommend seeing 8th MS Team first.
MS Team is more of a "Platoon"-like feel to the series, with battles on the ground and guerrilla tactics involved.

I enjoyed the surprise 0083 gave me in 1991 after having seen Zeta a number of times. I'm not sure if the reverse is as rewarding. I remember getting really psyched when certain Zeta characters appeared in 0083. Is this the same for those watching Zeta for the first time after watching 0083? 08th Squad has some really good shorts on the end of each LD, err DVD bonus, which give a history lesson on UC Gundam. Really fun stuff to show new Gundam fans.

I hate 08th MS Team with a passion. Just more milking of the franchise, with little concern for the UC time-line. I felt the characters and story were lame as well. Probably my least favorite Gundam. Go with 0083.

The first episode of the series actually takes place in outer space. So it crosses abit.

Well yeah, but that's only one episode, 12 more on Earth should be enough to not have to catorgorize it as having much depth with the whole outer space theme that most Gundam shows are famous for.
