That sounds very reasonable, but wouldnt you want to disable the sig if content (of the message I assume) is MORE than 250? As to prevent slow loads and excess space consumption, of course.

i'm not in a place where it'd be okay to check what mods are installed on the server, but we almost certainly use mod_gzip or some other form of compression.

basically, if you use any browser after version 4 (IE5+, NS6+, Mozilla) you support HTTP 1.1 requests... which means that your browser receives compressed forms of the pages, rather than raw text. Your browser then unpacks the data it received and turns it back into a webpage..

text gets compressed by ~70-80%...

.. and thus, the inclusion (or exclusion) of sigs makes little difference to the amount of space used. if your sig is 100 characters, it compresses it and only adds 20 bytes. 15 sigs per thread means it's around 300 bytes extra, per thread. while it adds up, we're not in need of every single byte we can manage to get.

as for the saving space: the sigs are stored separately in the DB. This means that when you change your sig, it changes on every message you've ever written.

again, i'm not in a good place to check on the server directly, but i'm not so sure that including/excluding sigs makes that much of a server load difference.. in the worst scenarios i can imagine (with our recent views/posts per day) it still pales to the amount of work necessary to recall info for the encyclopedia.

Won't it be easier to limit the number of lines or characters.

The number of characters is already limited to 255. Limiting the number of lines would involve making some custom changes to the forums. Enabling/disabling sigs altogether is only a checkbox in the forum settings. Can't get easier than that.

The main reason why I tried this is an issue of "cleanliness". I find that sigs add a lot of useless clutter to a forum. It's not just a matter of having too large sig pics; in a discussion, even a little quote is essentially pointless when you think about it.

Thumbs down. Give me sigs or give me... something.

How about imposing limits on image size and file size and a max number of lines of text. Feel free to disable/edit sigs that exceed the limits. Ban anyone who refuses to obey the rules.

is 400x125 too big for an image? And 30k is plenty space for any image.

I think that part of the problem here was that there are rules post in Teh Rules about sigs, but some people were either just ignoring them or didn't know they were breaking them. Besides, I'm not sure just how easy it would be for them to disable certain people's sigs over others and banning people for something as small as a sig is just another way of decreasing the discussion/debate pool of the community, which in some cases could either cause people to stop coming here or make us miss out on some really interesting posts. I could be wrong though. I am going to agree with Dan on the fact that really in a discussion type setting, a couple lines at the bottom really don't add much to the discussion, unless you change it with every single post to be relavant to the topic. And if you want to know more about a person's personality, either read a few of their past posts or PM them.

I guess I don't mind it. All I had was my name and a link to my site, but I suppose if anybody cared, they could just click on my profile. It does look cleaner though. It's just too bad it came to this when people could have just been more conservative about their signatures.

Now if there weren't anymore crap threads and cleaner posts, this place would be perfect.

I think that the limit was set to 100x45.... kinda too small for my tastes, something like 65x100 or 65x150 would be a LOT better... but then again, right now we don't have sigs at all... Sad I really don't think it hurts the "clenliness" of the forum... if anything, it spreads the posts out a little more... not so much of just text, text, and more text... it makes it more interesting... and did I here Dan right, you can just turn the sigs in your profile? I don't really see what the problem is then... Anime hyper

I would prefer them, I find them occasionally insightful and amusing, but if they are removed permanently, I shall move on and scarcely miss a beat.

If you save your images as .txt files you can trick GeoCities into letting you link to them. Very Happy

About the sigs, I don't really mind them being gone, but I like having them. If there's an option to turn them off then I don't see what the big deal is.

The big deal is that the people who have big signatures won't turn them off. The people who are willing to turn it off are the ones who don't care about not having signatures anyway.

If anything, there is a mod for phpbb that makes it so the sig only shows up once per page.

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=350747#350747

so if I posted like 7 times in a page, my sig would only show up on the first post and that's it.

[semi-tangental] while it's a total waste of sidebar space, I always thought it was cute for all the gamer boards to have HP/MP/etc on the sidebar :)

*wonders idly if such a mod exists for phpbb*

but when you turn it off, it only turns off for your computer, it is what YOU see, not what they see...
