I haven't seen Evangelion, but all I've heard are good things about it. Does anyone think it's bad or are there a few parts that aren't so great?

Hm, it's kind of tough to describe Eva without making it sound overhyped. It's one of those titles that usually needs to be seen multiple times to make sense. There's a lot of religious and literary symbolism, a good deal of violence, some comedy at the beginning, a little bit of fanservice, and a lot of character interaction.
Eh.. I would recommend using the Forum Search, but after looking at some of those threads myself, most of them seem to be littered with spoilers. I've seen it twice, and I would recommend you at least watch it once. Most people I've talked to or heard from seem to like it at least a little bit. I also don't like the dub, but about half of the fans out there do like it. I'm pretty picky, but I guess it isn't that bad. I'd recommend you rent the first Platinum volume if it's available. Good luck! Last edited by Tony K. on Wed Dec 15, 2004 12:10 am; edited 1 time in total |

Eva's all over the map. The first couple discs are fairly unspectacular, and the second half of the series is VERY uneven. The show was getting a lot of fanboys, and Anno was disgusted by how they were all a bunch of losers with no life outside of anime, so he messed with the series as much as possible. Results varied wildly. Since I'm fond of his work, I thought that Evangelion was fairly interesting, but it's far from a masterpiece. It's the kind of thing you watch once, but not something to return to again and again.

I'd have to disagree, I have seen eva around 7 times now. It is one of my favorites and I can recomend watching it. This is one of those anime that you will either love or hate, hard to be indifferent about it.

All of the religous symbolism and imagery is really just for kicks. The real story is Shinji's character. Shinji is one of the most realistic and well developed characters I have ever seen. A lot of the other characters are deep as well. Eva is worth watching just for that. It's kind of like the way beginning of Naruto. All of the ninja fighting was just the icing on the cake that was the characters.

I'll allways love EVA. It's deffinately an experience worth checking out. I'd reccomend the sub version, though - all subs sound too "Valley" to me. It does have it's crazy points, but some of the visuals are just unforgettable. All of the craziness and mystery will get you hooked right after the first DVD.
I must point out, though, that the formula has been improved upon. EVA is a great work, but IMO, RahXephon does it better. I'd recomend watching both - EVA for its "historical importance", and RahXephon for it's overall excellence. But, if I had to choose just one, I'd pick RahXephon. |

If I were you I would just watch it, a lot of people (including my self) have mixed opinions about it. It is defiantly worthy enough to be in your anime collection but don't listen to others conclusions on it, make your own. Evangelion is an odd anime, it starts out like a normal series “cliché” but as it progresses the psychology and religion really kick it to a point where you may get lost towards the end. Just get it, I can’t say any more.

I'd say its well charictorized and if you watch it dubed or subed it's good either way. however I didn't care about it as much as everyone around me. Sure it has plenty of emotion and a relatively strong story, it just seems overated. If you like conclusive endings, don't watch it it is a mind rape. Although if you like twists and endings that leave your mind open turning gears, by all means place this as your top priority. It absolutely is something to be watched over in order to catch the full feel of what is going on. Just be mindefull of the ending of the tv series is way under budget so the true endind (if you can call it that) is the movies. If you chose to watch it watch all 26 ep. then disregard the last two after you get confused, then watch the movies. You'll love the charictors as you get to know them, and possibly like in my case hate Shinji or others. I said what I could without giving anything away. hope it helps.

One thing I noticed about the dub though is the fact that the screams in Japanese are much more effective and emotional. spoiler[ like in the movie when Shinji screams NO! As komm susier todd plays (I can't spell it) that whole sequence is probably the most emotional sequence I’ve ever seen. ]
