I wish my local con did something like AM2 with the free entry and the passports for certain things. I skipped the convention last year because there simply wasn't enough going on to justify the expense. but with this setup one can go for a while, see some stuff, and go home without feeling like they wasted their money or needed to stick around to get their money's worth.

Wow, that musical lineup beats the hell out of an overhyped midi player.

ALso, I'd rather spend the weekend with my buds than thousands of strangers where we can't hear each other over the white noise of so many people packed in like sardines.

Sounds like AM2 is more my sort of con than the alternative.

I was thinking something along that lines: "If you want to see real people sing and play instruments, you go to AM2, if you want to see virtual reality pop stars, AX is for you!"

(Note to AM2: I'd be willing to let you use this slogan in your ads for next year's con, just PM me to work out a deal Laughing )

Why would anyone set up a convention in the same place at the same time at AX?!

That would be like The Community College of Baltimore County setting up an Anime con on the same weekend of Otakon! Does not compute.

Still, it looks like fun.

I expected to see more people there. Hard to see at the Sadie concert how full it was but hopefully the concerts will get good turn-out of fans. If I could have I'd have been there to see Kanon and Scandal.

Glad to see that ANN made an attempt to cover AM2. I was beginning to wonder. Considering one of the main draws of AM2 were the musical guests, how were the concerts? The artistry of "Shan the Candy Man" would have been interesting to see.

Long Story short, Anime Expo fired Chase Wang, so Chase Wang setup AM2 as revenge.

Yeah it looks kind of empty for the most part; reading the press release, you wouldn't have thought of it animenewsnetwork.com/press-release/2011-07-02/am2-launches-and-sets-the-bar-in-convention-entertainment

Well at least they got alot of people for their main events, I wonder how their numbers will turn out for the whole weekend.

This is the sorriest thing I've ever seen lol. Especially considering AX was this weekend as well.

Sort of reminds me of that David Gilmour and Roger Waters situation - where they ended up playing in the same city at the same time, only Gilmour got like 50,000 people at his show, while Waters barely got 500.

Agreed, its a shame that Waters didn't get a better turnout. He's a far better musician.

Revenge is stupid. Particularly when you're trying to make money (or even when you need to cover the cost of all the guests that you bring over from Japan).

What's Mr. Wang trying to prove? "I can get AX attendees to come to my con for a few hours so that they can attend a concert that AX can't offer, since I hired the artist first!" Really?

And Chase Wang's wallet is likely going to be a lot thinner after this escapade.

Maybe this'll happen with disgruntled Otakon staff as well. Lord knows we need more conventions.
