Another Mario toon? Naw, that'll be scary. Mario was my childhood hero, and I still love Nintendo games... but... no.
Otherwise, I think I'll pass on judging them for the moment until I actually see whatever they come up with with my own eyes. True, it could very well turn out to be something for the younger audience, but you never know.

I think Nintendo want to get away from their too kiddy image. To make a few anime series not so kiddy orientated would help things a lot.
Using series like Fire Emblem (despite the OAV), Golden Sun and Advance Wars would surely make them some good money if done properly. Metroid and Star Fox would also make interesting anime series.
I know it would make sense for them to act soon. With Viewtiful Joe and FMA series, Capcom and Square Enix are gonna make more cash, to help fund more cool games etc. It would also make sense with the situation in the games industry in japan, games are not selling as much as before so other revenue from anime would help Nintendo a lot. Nintendo also owns shares in Bandai, so perhaps they would have some help and advice, if they do decide to set up there own anime studio.
I remember the old Zelda series (but back in the day it was better than nothing) and it's way overdue reworking too. With those Tetsura Nomura character designs and some CG in their it would look awesome.
FF: Advent Children might well force Nintendo's hand to enter the game based anime market properly, after they seeing the figures it takes for Square Enix, which will be large no doubt. Having a Metroid movie made will help, but a few other IP series would be much better for story purposes and potential DVD sales.

Nintendo is very much interested in keeping their family-friendly image, even if they do start to embrace more mature titles for their systems, just like Disney has in its best interest to keep up the image of being a family-friendly company. The massive franchises they own are what set them apart from the crowd and make them so sucessful. To try and radically change the subject and market appeal for those franchises, or franchises associated with them, is to similarly change public persception of Nintendo as family-friendly fare.
Disney is a really good example of this: while they have taken steps to more closely associate themselves with an older generation, they have been careful to either distance the Disney name from those efforts (Miramax, Dimension Films, ABC) or promote the family-friendly atmosphere of the Disney brand as appealing to adults interesting in reliving their relaxed and less stressful younger years (commercials a year or two back often showed couples spending time together at Disney resorts).

So Nintendo are now actually gonna be doing anime, for real. Good news then, we might actually get that Zelda series we've been waiting ages to see.
On a sadder and perhaps more cautious note there is an edge of danger here. We all know how Nintendo are always going on about protecting their products, and how extreme that can be. With BT the way to obtain fansubs, what happens once a Nintendo owned show ends up being fansubbed and uploaded, which is more than likely if it's a good anime?
I can see Nintendo moving heaven and earth to sue and pull sites offline, I'd be surprised if they turned a blind eye like many anime studios do, then recouping the cost once the DVDs are available to buy.
As for the image thing I believe that Nintendo will put out a variety of shows, not just stuff based on their games and safe kid shows.
Nintendo are not Disney either. Yes, Disney had success for many years but now their animation is on the way out, because they know that everyone is now watching anime and Disney don't want to put out as much varied product to compete. This is why Disney shut some of their traditional animation studios not so long ago. Because their last few big films is have been crap, (minus some of the CG ones) and they have failed to change with the times fast enough. Remember When Pixar went solo from Disney, when Disney couldn't see the benefits of CG. Disney look really silly now and are kinda riding Pixar's coat tails again because they are well known.
The musical comedy adventure is what Disney do best, and while this and CG gloss might be enough for family fans, it's not enough for those that are hooked on the deeper storylines, of say Dragonball Z, Evangelion etc. Enough about Disney anyway
Squaresoft are cleaning up with FMA, and with such good competition do you really think Nintendo will act like Disney, and not diversify? Don't see it somehow, especially with the amount of anime that is released in japan every year, Nintendo will have no choice but to do so. I'm not talking diving in hentai or anything that extreme or strong, but hopefully we might get some good action anime shows out of them, and if everything goes well, some possible new games based on those Nintendo series.
I agree F-Zero wasn't all that, but it was a step away (well maybe not that big a step, but it didn't rely on cards to sell it) from damn constant Pokemon, so that is a start. A Zelda or Metroid series would be a great start with a lot of back story to build upon. If the story and animation are good people will flock and watch it, just like FMA. Really hope Nintendo surprise us, with something new for once though.

Dragonball Z "deep?" Please, there is nothing deep about fighting some superpowered alien for 4 episodes then realizing you need to shove one big-ass energy bomb/power/whatever up his colelctive rear-end..

Well, they've done a fine job of shamelessly whoring the same five mascots in their games so far, I don't see them changing that anytime soon. Having Mario & Link stomped down your throat gets old, y'know, which is why I'm sorry to say I have my doubts about Nintendo breaking into the animation business...

Just give me my Metroid Prime anime and I'll be happy. We seriously need one of those too!

At least Nintendo mascots have good games. Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, etc. What does Sony have? Crash Bandicoot? Jak and Daxter? Ratchet and Clank? Bleh. Utter crap. I can't think of a single X-Box mascot. Or any decent X-Box game for that matter.

I'd have to say, I agree with you. I think that the Zelda games are very good. (Excepting the cd-i ones. bleh) Nintendo's mascots DO have good games, and I think if a Zelda or Metroid anime was made it would make big bucks. So would the manga if it were ever released in America.

I actually prefer the fact that Sony & Microsoft don't have token mascots as crutches. If you ask me, Nintendo's written themselves into a corner and stunted their creativity by relying almost solely on a small handful of franchises and giving third-party support the finger (unless it's Capcom or Konami, for some reason). Same characters, same gameplay formulas, same old same old and now it's just dull, in my opinion. Another Mario platformer...yay...? Granted, back in the SNES days all these titles & characters were bloody awesome. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, these were all truly great games because the premise hadn't been thrown on us several hundred times in succession just yet.
As it stands, about the only Nintendo franchise to really go anywhere creatively has been Metroid. Zelda, Mario, & DK are all the same old SNES experience in 3-D. And all this "Mario Golf" crap doesn't cut it, either. That's just being even more obnoxiously shameless by taking a Tiger Woods game and tossing a fluffy Nintendo shell on top of it.

Nagisa: True, but unlike Square and Capcom-and eventually Konami-Nintendo doesn't have developers fleeing to start their own companies.(Yet...)

Man, I just wish Dragonball would just die already.
Ranks up there with Baywatch as the most stupidest Import/Export of all-time.
