I can't make mayself believe that manga needs to be cute and fluffy to succeed in the market. I don't like the state of the market and series that are fluff certainly are popular, but those aren't the only thing that sells. Saying thats the reason it failed and not because they had the idea that they could make a weekly serialization succeed without any TPBs initially is a iffy statement. In any case they had some series like that, they just choose to use their better series to sell it.
And how many of those kids do you think reguarly visits bookstores? Some I'm sure, but the majority probobl wouldn't buy manga. |

tempest: Toei probably took the first offer, because there isn't much of a demand for Slam Dunk right now.
Kagemusha:
People who answered their surveys mostly didn't like paying for a weekly magazine. What was really lacking at the company was synergy. For example, when the Fist and City Hunter anime got released here on dvd, they didn't take advantage of it to advertise their own TPB's.
I see more of them in stores than adults. And they're usually the ones leafing through manga. |

Not an excellent show? What have you been smoking? It's the best damn fighting series ever made. It's about damn time it was licensed. I want DVDs so I can see Maki kick ass on my TV! http://www.pcpages.com/danielg/1092604377106.gif |

If Geneon does in fact now have exclusive rights to Toei animation now, this could be a very good thing for Sailormoon, seeing as Toei is now hording the rights for the series, and wants to apparently sell it all at once to a company.
Course it depends if Geneon is willing to pay the possibly insane price for it. |

Oh, I didn't say it sucks either. I like it, but it isn't a masterpiece anime, but I do intend on buying it when the DVD's are available. |

Has one of the most annoying sub-character ever. Also, none of the chick are really attractive and you can easily mistaken Maki as a man. Girls that kick butt? Well Ikkitousen (battle vixen) has a female kicking butt and there's echii goodness for all, unless they're anti-pantsu fruitcakes. |

The excessive fanservice (I don't mind fan service except when it gets excessive) in Ikki-tousen is what will prevent me from buying the series. It did have a good story though, but I don't have any intention of buying it at this time. To me, the fanservice in Please Twins and Please Teacher wasn't excessive since they don't really show that much. UFO Princess Warukure was getting near excessive fan service, and the Slayers anime starts off with a bunch of nude women in an onsen, that is pretty much excessive there. |

I'm not so sure myself, unless you are specifically talking about Sailor Stars. Last numbers I had seen from Geneon were that the sales trend started to decline with the release of S and only worsened once SuperS came along. |

Yes, I'm aware of this, however since popularity was falling, and lack of sales (loathed are not, most younger people who were into Sailor Moon would not know whether it was loathed or not, unless they got the DVDs anyway) I doubt Geneon would try to bring back all of SM. If they get Sailor Stars, that would be awesome and I'm sure it will sell quite well, but I'm pretty skeptical that SS will EVER make it over here. |

Renge is annoying, but no American VA Geneon uses could possibly be as bad as the Japanese VA, so that's one problem fixed already. I like how Maki looks. AM's characters have a unique look to them. It's sort of cute. <_< And while Ikki-Tousen may be worse(better) in the fanservice department, it has really...awful fights. I mean bad. Air Master on the other hand has great fights. I don't even care about the small amount of fanservice it has! |

Just to keep things in perspective: Geneon can't possibly have exclusive rights to Toei's library, because lots of their titles have already been brought to America by other companies. And while I haven't actually looked it up, I don't believe Toei has allowed all of those series' rights to expire as it has with Sailor Moon. Probably the biggest example would be the Dragon Ball franchise, which Funimation is still trying to milk for all its worth. (And, FWIW, IIRC, Geneon actually lost the rights to that series a few years ago and Toei preferred instead to give full ownership to FUNi. Kinda runs contrary to this new announcement.)
Still, I can't help but admit that this is eerily similar to a prediction the user named Tenchi made quite a while back. (Although I think he predicted that FUNimation would get the deal?) Being a big old-school Sailor Moon fan myself, I can't help but continue to doubt the possibility of Sailorstars getting released, but it would certainly be very interesting if it did, just as Tenchi predicted. At any rate, it will be interesting to see what titles Geneon does release, considering that many of the (previously unlicensed) titles attributed to Toei in the Encyclopedia are somewhat older shows. |

I can't believe I'm the first to bring up Toei Douga.
If they've got access to anything in Toei's library, this means that we'll finally be able to see all the movies recognized as THE classics in Japan, like Puss in Boots, White Snake Enchantress, and Adventures of Hols, Prince of the Sun. I mean, it would be really nice to see the original Captain Harlock TV series, but I'd rather get a movie that launched the careers of both Miyazaki and Takahata first. |

I believe most of the sales of Sailor Moon decline due to the poor dubbing of the series, through don't take my word on that. The S season is the most popular season to date (through, I think Stars beats it in Japan) mainly due to the Outers showing up. Super S isn't loathed by fans; it's just not the best season out there (which only Toei is to blame for that, the manga one was pretty good). I would love to see Stars, but I doubt it. Toei loves the kiddie image Sailor Moon has here (so I've heard). I doubt that they would want to ruin it with Stars. And, if Stars was dubbed, it'll likely be butchered like the rest of the series was. Don't think I want to see that. |
