I dont think eds voice was too great but i loved Al's voice i think he did a great job of portraying Al's youth and innocence and his willingness to believe Cornello was a prophet, I have to give props to that kid.

Al's voice. Should. Die.

You want a 12 year old boy to die? Shocked

Al doesn't even sound like a 10 year old (at the beginning). He sounds 6 or something.

Well his voice actor is a 12 year old kid, and his japanese voice was a 30-something japanese chick (who is pretty cute may I add). I think his english VA sounds more natural though.

It'll get better in time, the kids gotta settle into his role, even Al's japanese VA didn't sound that great when she first got started. It'll take a good several or so episodes.

From what I've heard, the Japanese company required Funimation to record Al's voice using the same method used in Japan: by holding a metal pot over the microphone, or something.

Pretty weird.

Also, I sure hope FMA pulls in some Inuyasha-level ratings. It certainly deserves it, and then some.

Al's voice didn't bug me much at all; neither did Ed's. I was a bit more taken aback by Al's voice the first time I heard it on fansub, since you'd expect a big hulking armored thing to sound, well, big and hulking. But I think the contrast provided by such a childish, innocent voice really helps Al stand out.

I was really worried about this dub, not because FUNimation was in charge of it, but because it's one of my favorite anime ever. They really came through though-even my friend the obsessive dub hater liked it (and we can count the dubs she can tolerate on one hand-it's FMA, Fruits Basket and Big O. All others are rejected.)

Indeed. I usually prefer the original Japanese, and at the moment, I still do. However, I didn't have any real major issues with this dub. Sure, Ed and Rose sounded a little too old for their parts, but it's not something that completely detracted from my enjoyment. As far as Al's voice, considering they actually got a kid to do it, I'm actually impressed. I hope the dub gets better over time. I want it to have as much of an emotional impact as the original. (for the general audience)

If Al had been given a better voice, I might actually watch this in English. (prolly not, as that's WAY past my curfew). But literally--and I'm not making an obsessed fangirl ramble-complaint--Al ruined the entire experience.

...that, and the fact that Ed can't make any short jokes funny. Ah, shame.

That is exactly what you're doing. The voice fits the character and sounds remarkably similar to the Japanese. There are somethings that are completely subjective and some that are not; you're looking for things to hate and you found one. Amazing.

Wow, for once, Zac and I agree on something. Surely it must be a pending sign of the apocalypse. Wink

The biggest complaint I've heard about Al's voice was that the distortion effect made it hard to understand. But there's two points to consider- first that Funi recorded Al's voice using the exact same method as was used for the original Japanese, and second that Al's Japanese voice *wasn't* necessarily perfectly clear. People jsut think that because they were reading the subtitles, not hearing and understanding the actual Japanese dialogue.

That said, in any case I don't think Al's dubbed voice was hard to understand at all, in any case. The dubbing overall was pretty good, and has the potential to get even better.

I'm glad to see atleast one forum where people like the dub. Very Happy I thought it was great personally. Funimation seems to be doing a good job especially after they did fruit baskets.

It seems that many of the people who posted here have had a lot of exposure to FMA. Well, I haven't. This was the first time I had ever seen any FullMetal Alchemist, and I thought it was spectacular.

I thought the voices were fine, and am curious as to why the voice acting is such a big deal to all of you.
