Now that Spice & Wolf II has the magic release date of 8/2/11 Amazon has it for preorder. Preordering means that I can get the LE combo pack, but I want to know if that is worthwhile.
Specifically, does it come with real LE physical extras? I'd consider the artbook from Sacred Blacksmith to be a real LE extra, whereas the original Spice & Wolf coin I would not. Also, will there be English extras? These are what I look for when I buy DVDs. J-extras can be great, but the English extras are what seal the deal for me buying dvds. Finally, a Funimation show I'd consider worth buying. Now if only Darker than Black 2 would show up... ![]() |

Usually within a month the page on RightStuf (and I'm assuming other similar sites) gets updated with more info (i.e. cover art, extras, stuff like that).

Thanks for moving the thread to this forum.
I don't remember what the J-extras are supposed to be, just that they are supposed to be on the disc. What were they? Hopefully there will at least be an English commentary track or 2 on the DVD. J Michael Tatum et al already ramble on about the show so much that they could easily fill a commentary slot ![]() |

Righstuf already has some info out on the Spice and Wolf Season 2 LE. It contains a LE Coin of Holo.
http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/sSOCX7yu6yoGKkAZjH/browse/item/91990/4/0/0 It's only 3-4 dollars more than the non LE. The down side though is you missed out on rightstuf's funimation sale a week or so ago, that's when I preordered mine. |

Thanks, though a promised coin alone isn't enough for me to stake 46-47 bucks on. I'm going to hold out until I find out what these vaunted J-extras are, and see if there are any English extras.
Amazon has this for 46 bucks, which wasn't too bad until I realized that the 10% discount on rightstuf makes it the same price. ![]() I guess I'm also leery because I hear that Spice & Wolf II was abhorrent (But I haven't seen it yet). I hear that Darker than Black II is also awful, but on principle I'm going to get that. Hopefully that will continue the proud tradition of English extras that Darker than Black I started. |

I've already seen Spice and Wolf II and the extras (assuming the Japanese ones are going to be the same). It includes an OVA episode that's 20 minutes or so (I think it's listed on ANN's encyc) and a few short clips of Holo leading stretch exercises. As for the coin, I can see your point on not fishing out 46-47 bucks, but without the coin it's not much cheaper either. Honestly if you're just waiting for the best possible price, i'd wait until the funi sale which will knock off 5-8 more bucks. If you want an EVEN better price, just wait awhile until the price goes down by itself. I slapped my money down for the LE cause I'm just so happy that Spice and Wolf II got licensed and want funi to have my moniesz. As for it being "abhorrent", I dunno. As Varmintx said, it received very high ratings on ANN and I personally enjoyed it very much. I honestly have a hard time seeing anyone that enjoyed the characters in season 1 disliking season 2... but who knows maybe im out of the loop. I suggest poking your head around the Spice and Wolf II forums. As for Darker than Black II, it's personal preference I guess. I'm most likely in the minority here but I enjoyed season 2 more than season 2 >>. |

I guess what I was really hoping for were the video interviews/skits and commentaries that made up the J-extras of yesteryear, but I've come to realize that most fans don't want those things ![]() Sadly I cannot really preview Darker than Black 2 or Spice and Wolf 2 before they release as I couldn't get into the shows with the Japanese voicing. So with the exception of accolades from people who have viewed it in Japanese, this will be a blind buy for me, which is why I'm nervous about it. Buying dvds before seeing the show has only worked once for me...other times it was a spectacular failure. On ratings, based on Season 1 alone (ie without knowing there'd be a season 2 to continue the story), I for one would not have given S&W S1 a rating of "Excellent". I would have been in that lower 50%, so high ratings for S2 don't really encourage me. |

If you've seen and liked season 1, then your chances of liking it's sequel are very high. Season 2 is more of the same with a greater emphasis on spoiler[Laurence and Holo's romance].

Pretty much this.Don't put so much store in what other people rate the series as. Since you don't like the subbed version, if you wait eventually Funimation will put up the first couple of episodes dubbed. It probably won't be til around the release date, but they will. As for me, I actually liked season 2 more than season 1. |

By which I mean, if you liked the first season you shouldn't hate this one. (Where are these reports of it being "abhorrent" coming from anyway? I've yet to see such a comment in my tube divings.) I empathize with you on the difficulties getting into the Japanese. I have the same problem though I can usually enjoy the series in Japanese if I watch in short doses of 1-2 episodes. English extras are rare even with a company like Funi that dubs everything. (And count me as one who'd squeal at Brina playing Holo leading me in exercises! I'm dieting right now so I could use the motivation.) So take my opinion that season 2 should be to your liking with a grain of salt but as long as you liked the first season I think you'll be fine buying the second. (And if you don't want the coin, consider offering to sell it to me down the road. I've got a small stack of the first season coins. Coins are like my second favorite extra ever.) |

I don't mean to rain on anybody's parade, even though I hate parades, but I would advise skepticism toward the encyclopedia's user ratings. I suspect that there's a lot of selection bias, namely that people who liked something are generally likelier to issue a rating, especially for sequels, which tend to be watched by the devoted faithful of the original. Spice and Wolf II has also been seen fewer than half as many people as the original, which makes sense given that it hasn't had an English release yet, but reduces the sample size nonetheless. |

@Varmintx
Obviously you should take User Ratings with a grain of salt... just cause a show has very high ratings doesn't mean you'll like it. In my PERSONAL experience though, i have a higher chance enjoying a show that has high ANN rankings to not. To each his own. Like people were saying, if you like the emphasis of Holo and Lawrence and are ready for some more econ/supply and demand, season 2 is up your ally. If you're really this on the fence, just wait till the price drops. |
