Have you ever experienced a case where you totally hated a specific
genre, sci-fi for instance, yet found a show within that genre that
you adored, like gundam?

What is it about certain shows that makes them surpass genre
expectations into something more?

I myself hate giant robot shows with a passion and yet two
of my all-time favorites are Neon Genesis Evangelion and Code
Geass which are at their core giant robot series. Both of these
series surpass the genre norms by having a real heart to them
which makes all the difference for me.

What are your thoughts on this topic?

With anything, regardless of genre, it's the writing that determines whether I like something or not. It can be a genre I'm not all that into, but if the writing is there I will enjoy it. If the characters and stories are well written then it's worth a shot.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I find that if I like the characters
and story then I'll usually enjoy the series. Art style is
important too.

What shows do you like that pertain to this thread?

Well, I tend to avoid magical girl shows however I ended up greatly enjoying the new perspectives that the 3 Lyrical Nanoha series and Puela Magi Madoka Magika brought to the table. They tended to take themselves more seriously and avoided the genre trappings I didn't care for...well, for the most part

My thought is this is a great topic.

I have watched a lot of anime over the past several years. A lot of crap but at lot of good to excellent stuff. To see the good stuff you have to be willing to watch things that you would not normally be inclined to.

Mecha and Samurai stories are not high on my preference list, but I have seen more than a few that I thought were really good. (In anime those topics can be separate or together.)

It all boils down to the quality of the storytelling. The anime form of storytelling is different from any other, and in all these years I haven't yet been able to define it.

Meh. This the usual, "I liked this show, despite not usually liking these shows, despite not watching these kind of shows or having any knowledge of them" -thread. Generalization bating.

I like all kinds of genres and stuff; I guess the stuff I like the least is samurai-based shows. Kenshin and Champloo were okay. Haven't seen one yet that made me go "Completely awesome!" though.

Generally don't like fighting shows in which the girl's humongous breast sizes is as much, or more, of a focus of the show.

Sekirei started out as an exception to the rule, the harem worked pretty well, and while 90% had inconceivably sized boobs (the exceptions being a child and a trap) it wasn't hammered into your skull. Unfortunately the story in the second season went downhill and I won't be bothering to continue it if more seasons are released.

So, nope, yet to see a show of this type truly separate itself from the chaff.

I don't have an anime genre that I blindly hate and try to avoid.

The closest example would be Shion no Ou. This anime focused around shogi as the means for competition and personal revelations. I don't not expect to like this show because game anime usually are enjoyed by people who are at least kind of familiar with how to play. I just took the ranking system and styles of the characters at face value and enjoyed the shogi matches as much as I could.

I can't stand samurai shows either TitanXL. Or ninja shows. Or
anything involving swords for that matter. Does anyone know any
that could change my mind?

I generally don't like shounen fighting shows, especially tournament ones, but I like Yu Yu Hakusho.

If you don´t like ninja/sword shows you might like Katanagatari.

I find it really hard to hate an entire genre of anime, even magical girl or highschool romantic comedies/ tearjerkers. This is because, even if i may dislike some of the worse anime that genre has to offer, i can still find it in me to enjoy some of the better anime from that genre, like Gundam or Clannad.

R.O.D the TV is certainly more than just a superhero show. It references Batman, (codename "The Joker") but also explicitly references Anne of Green Gables. It has a 12 year old girl who attends school, and has superpowers, but is at the same time not a magical girl show. I think it truly should be considered to have transcended easy categorization.
