I work at a Borders, and I'm actually po'ed by this. When I checked the computer at work to see when we would be getting Wolf's Rain, I noticed that we are only getting the special box set. If I want just the book, which is what I want, I'll have to special order it. Now when Inuyasha volume 19 came out, we got a ton of the special boxset with the action figure, but we also got two copies of just the book. Now I got to order it cause there's no way I'm paying five buck more for a box. So those of you who shop at Borders, you too may have to order the book if you don't want the boxset. blah

What really bugs me about these "Exclusive only to these big chain stores" deals that Viz has been doing recently is the fact that they are damn near forsaking all the small, independent comic book shops that made a real effort to stock their manga while the big book chains never seemed to give a shit about graphic novels at all.

When was the last time you went to a Waldenbooks or a Barnes & Noble? They have entire aisles devoted to manga now. |

Suppose to come with a limited edition card too, so it's not just for the box. Like most Limied edition, they charge extra for the special they include. Well it's a limited edition item, so it's over time, it'll be harder to find. |

$5 for a box isn't bad at all. Those Rurouni Kenshin boxes are going for $20. Besides most people will probably buy the box and then store on the shelf with the book spines showing anyway. |

Well I brought that fruit basket box for 10 buck a while back. It only hold 4 dvd. But I want my anime/manga in a nice collector box. Also when they call it limited edition, is there a limited to it? I know many people are trying to find the chobit (manga) box or the GTO (anime) box1 without any luck .

I seriously doubt that the manga will be big enough for the box to actually become a collectors item. |

Wow...maybe you live in a wonderful surreal world were comic book fanboys actually care about the manga fans. Like I said, I work at Borders and we get all the girls that are treated badly at the comic book shops. I used to be a reader of American comic books, but I couldn't put up with the shops and the whole environment surrounding them. Big stores like mine provide girls a safe place to shop were they won't be ignored, treated badly, or sexually harassed. Oh and btw my store has the largest manga section in the whole city out of all the bookstores and comic shops. |

I really have no idea what your talking about. Maybe the comicbook fans in your area are just dicks, but most comicbook fans I've talked to read manga. Every comicbook store I've gone to not only devotes alot of time and space to manga (more than most bookstores), but the workers there read a bunch of it and I reguarly have conversations with them about both comics and manga. In fact, I've only seen manga fans act obnoxious in comicbook stores, like this one time where these two girls sat in the middle of an asle, read and talked very loudly. They even acted like I was the jerk when I asked them nicely if I could access the shelf they were blocking. Thats nothing compared to Saturday when the store hosts Yugioh tournaments  I swear I'm going to kill some of those kids one of these days.

You know, it really depends on the comic store you go to. The one I go to is very well lit and clean, and most of the time I only ever seen women working there.

I should have specified that such was the way up until fairly recently. In the past, big book chains never cared, and now that manga is the current big thing, they're jumping all over it. Comic book and anime stores have been carrying manga for years, yet they seem to be getting shafted in the deal.
To be honest, my local comic book shop -- which has stocked manga for quite some time -- has high school and university girls in there quite a bit. And a good chunk of them are frequent customers. The owner of the shop is a woman, who looks to be in her 20's, and two of the four other people that work there are *gasp* women. And based on the conversations I've had with the employees, I've yet to hear about any such instances that happen in the shops you speak of. I guess I do live in some ass-backwords fantasy world where girls can get their shoujo at a comic book shop without being driven to tears by the patrons and/or employees. Sure, one of the guys there is a bit of a Warhammer snob, but the most he ever does is carry a bit of an "I'm better than you" attitude without being a total douchebag to the customers.[/quote] |
