Alright, I canceled the order. I asked the question before work, so I didn't have much time, but now that I've crunched numbers, it's in my best interest to go with Rightstuf.

Order consisting of the Makise Nendoroid and Haruhi Summer Festival Set:

With the current going rate, my order at Hobby Search is $51 before shipping. After, using SAL Registered, it'd probably be ~$62 assuming 1000 Yen shipping (wild guess).

An order at Righstuf costs $70.98. Throw in my GA membership, $4 off coupon (never used one before), and free shipping, it costs $60.28. I know the math is off, but that's what my email from TRSI says.

So yea, it's cheaper, and I get to work with a store I'm comfortable with. Thanks for the answers, everyone. I think what I'll do from now and is preorder the figures I really want immediately from AmiAmi, and hold off on the ones I'm sort of interested in and see if TRSI or RACS gets them in.

The reason I ordered everything immediately is because I've been under the impression anime merchandise sells out almost immediately, which is true for some things, but not the stuff I get, so I can play the waiting game. I haven't gone through something like this since I first started buying DVDs; it's like I'm a rookie all over again.

EDIT: By the way, PJ, Capital One cards don't charge currency conversion fees if you're interested.

Whole batch of interesting pre-orders at Ami Ami this morning.

Misaka in two editions. Not sure which one I'd go for (probably the one with a longer weapon (loved to play with snipers in Counter-Strike, thus..), but I only want it for the sister because Misaka to me is just some average character both in appearance and personality, while her sister's dead face is totally my boat.

From Occult Academy. Now, I must say that my relation with this character is somewhere between detestable and barely bearable, but that figure looks pretty good. I most likely won't buy it though.

And lastly pink haired girl from Queen's Blade. I can't recall this character (can anyone?), but the figure looks pretty good. The only real minus here is that she's from Queen's Blade. I'll give it some time, since I'm not a big fan of Megahouse either.

Anyway, that new stand arrived on Monday, but as you guys know a lazy guy like me wouldn't possibly get moving until half a week later.

One thing I completely forgot to account for is the soft-to-fluffy flooring in my bedroom, which results in a nightmare for a high and narrow 4 legged shelf. Fortunately my garage is full of crap and I found a part of what seemed to be a wardrobe or desk or space shuttle.

It's as small as expected, and I pretty much squeezed some and even stacked another. But then again, they look so much better this close to each other, with a total of 21 and no space for more. Of course, it also helped me notice which are my favorite figures. Some of my least favorites got the cold treatment and are all the way to the bottom.

Full image NSFW as always.

First, my 7 favorites. Dizzy on the right, and adult Miku on the left. Second from the top Remilia Scarlet and Natsume. Third from the top [whoever from Samurai Girls), Asuka, and Native (if I look at her from where I seat [which is a bit to the right compared to the photo's angle] I'd be staring at her [...] Laughing ). Second from the bottom actually has a bunch of figures I like: Saeko, Soniko, Shining Wind, and Shinra, but some other figures needed the best angles and this is where they wound up. The very bottom has Ami, Mari, yandere-chan, whoever from baka to test, adult Corticarte, and Hinagiku. Besides yandere-chan I don't care for the others a lot, but they're all visible from my bed which is where I usually watch anime from. I'll most likely move yandere-chan at some point. And lastly my autograph on Remilia's dusty base! I'm totally not dusting this any soon though.

Anyway, this opened up more space than I expected, and now I can handle another 6-9 regular 1/7 - 1/8 scale figures without overflowing again.

And of course, I completely forgot about Ginko and Hei. Since Hei doesn't come with a support - it actually does, but I'll still use some booze to hold him up. Man it's such a hassle to find a good pose for these things. Oh well, I'll leave that for later. But I'll most likely have Ginko sitting down, and Hei masked, holding both knifes, and with his cape.

____

Since you guys were talking about that Steins Gate, it appeared (unopened) at Mandarake for 6000 yen. So, I did you a favor and check the size of her box in person and tested the figure's weight. If you choose SAL it's likely to be around 1000 yen for shipping.

I don't own a credit card and have no desire to ever do so again. It's been 10 years now, and we've managed just fine without them.

This is why I have to watch what I do in pre-ordering overseas because of the changes in Yen to USD conversions. One day, it may be $120, but the next, it's $125. Not much, but it adds up if there are too many out there.

My last bill from HLJ came in at $157 and this was $20 more than I had calculated it out to be (even with its shipping costs available per figure). Not a big deal, but evident the conversion I used isn't the same they use (and I wish these sites would link to the sources they use).

On topic now: My Nendoroid Drossel figure came in yesterday and the thing is so damn cute! Yes, it's a "robot" (not sure what it is given I've never seen a show with it), but the over-sized head makes it so kawaii.

I haven't taken it out of the box yet only because I really need to buy a figure shelf that's cat proof (or make my own).

This leaves 2 outstanding orders:
-1 from Hobby Search Japan (new version of Kudryavka and Triela) due in Aug
-1 from GSC (Miku relief fund version) due in Jul

This feels weird to have so few orders to track. It's been a while since it was less than five.

*breathes deeply

Time to fix that.

Making a separated post for this because these things sell out really fast.

Since you guys were talking about that Steins Gate, it appeared (unopened) at Mandarake for 6000 yen (her RRP was 7800). So, I did you a favor and checked the size of her box in person and tested the figure's weight. If you choose SAL it's likely to be around 1000 yen for shipping. The figure's price is the same as this, so it comes down to the shipping.
And you better hurry if you want it from Mandarake.

Good news, everybody!

My faith in HLJ is restored as I just received a shipping notice which includes every item I ordered at the cost of 3702Yen (~$45) for shipping 1.04kg (2.3 pounds) via EMS.

SAL would have been around 2000Yen less, but weeks rather than days for shipping.

I'm not a very patient person. Razz

This week's arrivals run the gamut of quality, that's for sure:

From an Amazon Marketplace vendor, the early (circa 2000?) Jojo’s... DX figure of Dio:

Compared to more modern figures the paint job is, well, crap. I was expecting that though-- what a difference a decade makes in the world of figures. But that coy come-hither look, all wrapped up in a bed sheet-- that’s timeless (much like Dio himself). Plus he was relatively cheap and he’ll make a nice pair with the matching older DX Jotaro I’ve already got. I half-expect those two to reenact this scene from Dirty Dancing when I’m not looking, with Dio as Baby of course (What? Too much?).

Also, just today, I finally received the second of the three Movic Hakuouki figures, Okita Souji:

I preordered him from an eBay vendor late last year and even though he was released in March, I’m just getting him now. Something about the earthquake causing delays-- okay, it’s possible. But I’m never using eBay for a preorder again* (not that I would normally but I missed AmiAmi’s cutoff by a few days and was fairly desperate not to miss out on him).

Well, he does not disappoint. Really lovely. I was surprised to find no pegs on his stand but quickly realized that’s because he kneels perfectly fine on his own. I’ll have to be careful not to bump him around too much.

The details are exquisite: See his foot (with sculpted toenails), the bottom of his straw sandal, and the handle of his sword. I’m quite happy. One other nice thing is that the sting of the purchase price is also 5 months in the past and as such is ancient history-- so it’s almost like I got him for free! (Such is the logic of a collector; let's not ruin it.)

*[Not a good idea because once the purchase goes past the 60 (or is it 90?) day mark you can no longer leave feedback, good or bad. I’m also not sure if eBay can step in anymore if you get screwed. In my case the vendor, EnFWorkShop, closed up shop (!) in the interim with no notification which had me panicking at first (he had my $148 for this item since last December). Luckily though I’d dealt with him before under a different name (Funiverse) and knew he occasionally opens shops under alternate (but similar) names so I went right to the source and kept asking for updates. I’m not implying he was trying to pull a fast one (because I don’t think he was) but the experience has taught me that using eBay on preorders is a terribly risky thing to be avoided at all costs.]

P.S. I also just got notice from AmiAmi that a large, crazy man without pants is coming for me-- and I couldn't be happier. Laughing

Anime hyper Alas, Vanilla Ice only has eyes for Dio, as he is a most devoted henchman. No, seriously, he has issues.
(See his grand entrance at 15:00-- chock full of JJBA spoilers [and a meh dub], not that any of you care.)

My only consolation is that I can have him in all his crazed, pants-less glory in figure form at least. On that note, I'm really loving what I've seen from Di molto bene, a new figure manufacturer who so far seems to deal exclusive in Jojo's characters. In fact, I'm buying my first ever randomly-packed box from them and just keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get most of the set and not, say, 8 copies of the same figure (I wonder if that's ever happened to anyone?).

Decided to place some pre-orders. I just noticed it, but I hardly place pre-orders. The only figure I got through pre-order thus far is Dizzy, and that's 1 out of 30.
Shining Hearts Maxima 5,430
Shining Hearts KAGUYA 5,430
Shining Hearts 1/7 Xiao-Mei 5,780
Touhou Project 1/8 Yukari Yakumo 7,800
Shining Hearts The Hidden Snow Princess /Hayane 6,230
Shining Wind Blanc Neige -Swimsuit ver.- 5,430

Also gonna order this as soon as I get the opportunity. Probably will cost me like 12k yen after shipping because it's going through an extra middle man.

She's awesome though.

Also pre-ordered Gold Saw for June while at it. She's the figure that got me into figures in the first place. Laughing She's possibly gonna my collection's favorite for a good while.

I'm also most likely cancelling this Black Rock Shooter if it really is 1/10.

Very nice selection, egoist. I'm sure it doesn't surprise you in the least that I find Blanc Neige (or Snow White for you non-Frenchies) the most rowr-ific.

I love how GSC is maintaining consistent bases with the BRS line. I really want all three as well (Strength should be coming soon, I hope).

I'll eventually get them as well because they look good.

Hell, I'm even thinking of setting them in their own display case with a few blue LED backlights for emphasis.

By the way: why do I get the feeling this thread belongs only to a handful of us. Neutral

Strength is scheduled to release in September. I've got her pre-ordered and I'm considering doing the same for Gold Saw, but with the amount of stuff I have coming out in June, I may have to wait for her. Still need to get Dead Master and Black Rock Shooter.

@ Blood-

I wondered what Neige ment. Thanks for the info. A while back I picked up the figure of Blanc Neige in just a cape and boots. I had no idea where she came from, but just liked the looks.

When I got home from work today there was a randomly packed box I ordered, the second set of the Hetalia coin figures, there was nine in the set and none of them ended up being doubles. I was happy considering there were only nine (ten if you can't the secret was a double figure) figures in this set.

*Edit - Sweden had some pretty nasty paint transfer around his mouth and this one actually bothers me a little as it makes it look like he as been eating an Oreo or has two mouths. I've e-mailed amiami and now waiting on a response. Poor Sweden...

@ Poonk

I've bought several boxes of so called mystery boxes of Japanese figures. Every time I got a full set of figures with some extras. I'm not familiar with the company you mentioned though. Good Luck.
