I would hate it if the US courts got involved and make some bizarre judgment that may affect anime and manga being distributed in the US. Like cencorship or even banning certain things alltogether.

I'm waiting for future shocking MSNB expose's. "Does dressing up as furries promote beastiality?" Or how about the one on imaginative masturbation. Reports our contact via e-mail, "You can imagine anything while masturbating. The posibilities are scary."

Well, the burden of proof is on the "Anti-Porn" folks to prove that such things are "bad." If I recalled correctly, other than the potental Freedom of Speech problems, COPA also had a hard time proving what is exactly "kiddie porn" and whats not. The wording in the act was so vague and broad, that mere possestion of titles such as Mahromatic and Remote #3 would get you arrested. Or put it another way, I know some friends who look like Teenagers, yet they are in their late 20's. And they get carded constantly when they go into bars. |

regarding "Virtual Child Porn" its legal. So one could download all the lolicon hentai one wants to his little perverted hearts content and its A ok in the legal system. of course I dont see any company jumping on the bandwagon and licening any loliconish Hentai's but legaly they could if they wanted to. Only recent court case I know of. |

Actually... RightStuf has licensed some stuff that does. For example, Little Monica OVA was grabbed about 2 years ago. Not that they've released it... And it's also the most likely reason why we finally got the truly uncut version of Kite out here now as well. The effects may be minimal, but they are there. |

So tripe like Kite gets released in America, but Salo doesn't?

I'm not particularily familiar with Salo?
Even so, you can expect that over time, more stuff will come out in the US due that that ruling. Just give it a few more years... if the laws don't change that is. |

Won't come over, it's not anime. Salo was an adaptation of the Marquis de Sade's The 120 Days in Sodom, and there is still controversy over whether some the actors were of legal age at the time. Nevertheless it's an incredible film, one that really forces you to think about what's being shown, and it contains some truly brilliant sequences (especially in the final act). There was one American release a long time ago, but it was pulled off the market so quickly that it eventually achieved fame as the rarest DVD in the world.
Kite, on the other hand, is about on the same artistic level of Cannibal Holocaust. That is, it has a story to tell, but it's also pretty obvious what its real raison d'être is. But because of a loophole in the law, it's considered to be perfectly acceptable. Can you see why I'm a little upset by this? |

Far from the truth. I own a copy of it. And it's not that rare. Not to get overtly graphic, but Salo is split up into 4 parts. spoiler['Antechamber of Hell' where it establishes the main characters. 'Circle of Obsessions' where the perversity really begins. 'Circle of S***' which is the most graphic and disturbing of the 4 parts. 'Circle of Blood' shows the extremes that the men are willing to go to enjoy themselves.] In essence, think of the Marquis De Sade and couple him with Jeffery Dalmer. Thats the film in a nutshell. |

Are you sure it's not a bootleg? The Criterion DVD usually goes for several hundred dollars, at least.
And I disagree completely with your interpretation of the film, but I can definitely see your point of view. It *is* quite sickening. |
