My question for you is simple and straight-forward my fellow anime fanatics!
What is your favorite character personality type in anime and why? Anime like any story-telling media has a collection of characters that appear with regularity and an assortment of common personality types that may or may not get far beyond a base stereotype. I'm sure many of you are familiar with some of the popular Japanese terms for those personalities so feel free to flaunt your esoteric knowledge here! For me, my personal favorite personality type is the Yandere. Yes, I love those insane yet devoted characters (very typically ladies) who really let themselves go all out for their love. There's something very enticing about the concept of a character being both utterly devoted to someone (selflessness tends to be treated as a positive character trait) yet crazy and possibly homicidal (which is usually thought of as pretty negative.) I'm very drawn to these sorts of dichotomies to begin with as I view everything in terms of being a mix of good/bad. The great thing about a Yandere character is that they are absolutely loyal to the person they care about and do everything and anything to be with them/please them. Love is to them an obsession and while the average Yandere clearly has some issues, I'm very drawn to this kind of personality type because I've dealt with so much betrayal of trust over the years by everyone from family to teachers to so-called friends. Someone who is totally loyal and giving, even if more than a little unhinged, would be a welcome change. Hey, as long as you treat a Yandere right, they're reasonably safe! A Yandere will cook, clean, support and take righteous vengeance on your behalf without even needing to be asked and asks for nothing in return but your love! (Okay, sometimes a Yandere will also want you to never ever be around anyone else but usually this reaction happens as a result of you not spending enough time with the Yandere or failing to remind them of your own affection.) A Yandere is dangerous of course but if you think about it, the vast majority of cases where a Yandere was murderous, they only acted on the impulse to kill in of two scenarios: First, when the target of their affection rejected them (leading the Yandere to try and remove the obstacle to the relationship) which usually follows the Yandere having allowed quite a bit of freedom for their love interest to interact with others and also usually after considerable hardwork of the Yandere to make said love interest happy. Think Kaede in Shuffle. The other options is when someone tries to the hurt the target of their affection. This will often trigger violence if not successful murder. The Yandere is almost always acting with your best interests at heart in this scenario. Of course, the Yandere always believes they know what is best but while they sometimes go way too far, their heart is in the right place and it is supposed to be the thought that counts, right? Think Yuno in Mirai Nikki /Future Diary. Actually, Yuno Gasai is considered by many Yandere fans to be something of a patron saint or even a goddess. Yandere's are really quite awesome. And they tend to be pretty cute too, even with blood on themselves. Here's a rather interesting read on the pros of being in a relationship with a Yandere. Work-safeness of the prior sites linked to not guaranteed, though there's nothing obscene about the picture I linked to. So what character type in anime do you gravitate toward the most and why? |

My favorite characters are usually the witty type who are clever, have a sense of humor, and are often sarcastic. Those able to read people, possess common sense, and hold their own in conversations or arguments. I probably like them because they're the same type of people I'd choose to hang with.

There is no general type that automatically states my acceptance for the character. However, for females I like the tsundere type, but not just any stock character. There has to be a complete development span for me to like such a character and sadly that just doesn't happen very often. I don't know, it is just nice to see a character reach out for others and that is exceptionally visible for tsundere types. I also like some rare independent and genki types, as long as they have some emotional depth and drive in them too. (I like: Hayase Misa, Oscar Francois de Jarjeyes and Naegino Sora.)
For male characters, I prefer the charismatic, somewhat stoic types. I like to see my male leads experienced and have presence. Shows like LoGH and HnK are a god sent to me. Zero to hero types are good too, but that usually comes with an unavoidable anst span, which can sometimes be extended to ridiculous lenghs *cough*Hikaru no Go*cough*. Then there are the enigmatic type leads present in mystery shows, although those I like for the cool factor alone. (I like: Kenshiro, Simon and Ginko.) I guess that came a bit convoluted. In short tsundere are good for females and charismatic types for males. It doesn't really matter that much as long as they have presence, drive and some degree of emotional depth to connect with. |

I'll deal with female and male characters separately. It's the female characters that draw me to anime, whereas, for the male characters, I tend to be more dismissive but less critical, if that make sense. It may be worth noting that I am a middle-aged male viewer.
Female characters. Sorry to start off with a list but I'll work from there. My favourites include (in alphabetical order) Auntie Witch (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time), Clare (Claymore), Duck (Princess Tutu), Fio (Porco Rosso), Lady Eboshi (Spirited Away), Mireille Bouquet (Noir), Nagi (Time of Eve), Nanoka (Koi Kaze), Naomi Misore (Death Note), Paprika / Dr Chiba (Paprika), Reki (Haibane Renmei), Rin Tohsaka (Fate / Stay Night), Sophia Forester (Last Exile), Sumika (Sasameke Koto), Tomoe (Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal), Tonyu (Mushi-Shi) & Vanessa (Madlax). There are many others I could list. With some notable exceptions (Duck, Nanoka) these are generally highly capable women who tend to a serious and intelligent nature. Some could even be considered icy. Several of them are older than your normal anime character, which probably reflects my own situation. If you wanted to put a label on my taste in female characters, it would be somewhere between kuu- and tsun- (you can forget the -dere half). The list above doesn't have so many tsun- characters but other second rung characters I like include Kyou and Tomoyo (Clannad), Sanada (Samurai Girls), Motoko (Love Hina), Haruhi Suzumiya & Ai (Video Girl Ai). Male Characters. Again, forgive the initial list. I also have to say that I generally regard these characters with less affection than the women listed above: Fakir (Princess Tutu), Ginko (Mushi-Shi), Gotoh (Patlabor movies 1 & 2), Kashue (Lodoss War), Kenshin (Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal), Kyon (Haruhi Suzumiya), Porco Rosso, Remi Breffort (Noir), Ricardo (El Cazador de la Bruja), Sasake Furuta (Hyouge Mono), Tenma (Monster), The Count (Gankutsuo), Tomoya (Clannad). Looking at them, they tend to be leaders but their heroics are usually displayed by thinking through problems as opposed to beating people up (with a couple of exceptions). They are usually have a restrained, thoughtful nature, perhaps a male equivalent of kuudure. Isn't it odd that there are lots of terms for female anime characters but none for males? |

Terms such as kuudere and tsundere are perfectly applicable to males as well. |

Ditto. Throw in glasses and red hair, and you'd pretty much have my dream girl both in anime and IRL. Other than that, I guess I mostly prefer characters who I can look up to rather than identify with. Characters who can be described with the words cool and/or badass and who are often the older mentor-type (may or may not get killed). Being a kind of a drifter type would also be a plus, I always have been fond of the 'wandering warrior' archetype. Examples: Spike (Cowboy Bepop), Balsa (Moribito), Balalaika (Black Lagoon), Guts (Berserk), Alberto (Giant Robo), Ryoma Nagare (Getter Robo OVAs) and pretty much everyone in Ghost in the Shell. |

Male- Guys that are so strong that even strong tsundere girls can not "beat" them up. I get so tired of watching boys being whipped around by tsundere girls like in Familiar of Zero, ToraDora, etc. Don't get me wrong I loved those anime, but strong tsundere girls seems to happen a lot in anime. Give me guys like Kazuma in Kaze No Stigma, who was so strong that tsundere Ayano could barely touch him. I guess it also applies to Special A. Also the new anime Hidan No Aria- the main guy in the "mode" easily escaped from Aria. If you guys know any more anime with this type of guys, let me know please.
Female- Kickass girls who are nice people. Also one can tell from my name, that I have a soft spot for white/gray/silver haired girls. I like girls like Tomoyo from Clannad, Yu from Kore Wa Zombie Desu. Suigintou from Rozen Maiden but I only watched the first episode. |

You stole my line. I also enjoy yangire (Higurashi) nearly as much. There's really nothing better than yandere, but quality yandere come in very limited numbers, and that excludes School Days (they had some shit ineffective yandere there that they did). This is also partly why I simply loved to watch Senjougahara... there's some yandere blood flowing in her veins that there be. |

I'll play along only because I know I wouldn't want one of these girls in real life (anime males are non-existent in my world).
My favorite: the "tsundere", commonly the "angry but sweet" type. Characters to fall into this category include: Kagami (Lucky Star), Chidori (Full Metal Panic), and Shana (Shakugan no Shana), just to name a few. I find this quality... charming, only because they're so reluctant to give up their sweet side easily (and often times, without a fight). It makes for an interesting relationship with others, especially when the group gets large. I also like the type supported by characters like Sanya (Strike Witches), Primula (Shuffle!), and Fate (Nanoha). They're so laid back, easy to talk to, but damn if you piss them off because they'll waste no time taking your ass out. Yandere? Pansies compared to these girls. You don't even need to give them love. Hell, they'd probably only require sunlight and water for all I know. It also doesn't hurt if these girls look as gorgeous as possible, either. |

I'll play along with the "dere" types. I like kuuderes although, like shiny Pokemon, they're rare to see. The closest girl that fits in for a kuudere is Hitagi Senjougahara.
For those who don't know, a kuudere is a character who does not care if their beloved dies (outside demonstration), but deep down, in that black heart of theirs, they really do care. I also like airhead female characters. I find it entertaining and cute. A character like Mayushii from Steins;Gate would be one. |

I like suprises. Its too boring when u can map out people's behavior, it's just ...meh. Characters that resemble people u'd meet in the real world r my thing.
The mushi master from Mushi-shi(forgot his name) is what i'm looking for. |

It makes anime seem rather shallow when you have every character type mapped out in your head lol.

I think anime character tropes place too much limitation on characters, so in the same way I can describe which type of RL person I admire, I apply the same rules and standards with anime characters: that there aren't any.
So that leaves me with really just subjectively describing a character that I find interesting, attractive and would be fun to hang around with. But to put it in terms of "dere" I suppose the one that is probably most similar to an ideal personality type is yandere, although I don't really care about the insane, murderous part. I'm very fond of those anime girls who are just super sweet, friendly and open to the main character, without many strings attached. A little bit of silliness or eccentricity is even better but nothing that you would find yourself lying in a gutter somewhere if it was suggested that you liked another girl too. I think another bonus to making a character very appealing is a dark and mysterious side. Like girls who have an odd sense of what's cute, like thinking iguanas, chameleons and various creepy crawlies are cute but not teddy bears or kittens. Anime guys aren't stylized, looked at as subjects of admiration or as character studies nearly enough as girls so there's less bases for which to describe a favorite personality for male characters. With one exception: really girly guys (ie cute, crossdressing or uber moe-shota types). |

You guys need a system. Say you have a bounded scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best. Every character starts out with a 5, and then you add or subtract points up to the bound according to a chart like the following:
Wears traditional clothes sometimes: +2 Spiky hair: -1 Good at school: +1 Good with computers: +1 Impossibly good with computers: -2 Younger siblings look up to them: +2 Learns from mistakes: +4 Fails to learn from mistakes: -2 Realistic self image: +2 Breasts bigger than a handfull: M:-9 F:-2 Gets nosebleed when aroused: M:-4 F:-2 Obnoxious leering face: -4 Good spittake: +1 Good reaction to spittake: +2 Poise in difficult situations: +4 Dictates sexual mores of others: -4 Unable to get the words out: -5 Now I'm bored with this but you get the idea. |
