Now to get permission to create a translated overlay for it.

Ah, that makes more sense- they're posting it webcomic style, with ads. In fact, they're using a layout very similar to VIZ's- flash based, book layout format. The way it was worded earlier I thought it was going to be wierd, downloadable PDF's like Akamatsu's less successful early attempt [ie- where he had links to sponsors, and hoped downloaders would go buy something].
This should work just fine for him- it's not uncommon for artists to post out of print works online in the english comics world. Lea Hernandez did this with some of her older comics. Webcomics tend to be selfsustainable, and the manga artist'll be getting some income from the ads, which is a good thing. Nice job Akamatsu.
Agila-- I imagine the ability to post english translations is all in the authors hands [unless they've licensed the work overseas, like Akamatsu has with Love Hina, though even then the author usually retains digital rights, which is why you see VIZ's translations on Square Enix's online manga website], and depends on translators offering their services. This looks pretty similar to what Digital Manga has planned with their upcoming online manga project.....

Huh, so the "purified" comics are being hosted on JComi, and not being returned to their pirated venues. I wonder how JComi intends to absorb the hosting/bandwidth costs? Either these are minimal at the moment, or they hope to offset it with increased traffic to their site in general.
Didn't expect for anyone to jump on so soon, guess we'll see how well this works out then! Wishing these guys the best of luck on this, and pretty interested in the results.

Ah, I thought they were going to embed ads in the blank edges of each page or something (which I thought would be horrible).
It looks like they just put ads underneath the viewer (which my adblocker caught anyway )
They need to make the viewer bigger though, so when there are manga with the furigana aid, the furigana will actually be legible.

The fullsize pages (827×1170 for this manga) are viewable with the zoom button.
Not the most secure website, since even though they use encrypted links which expire, the fullsize pages are stored in the browser cache. It would be rather trivial to save fullsize scans of the entire manga. Of course, given the nature of the project using illegal scans of out-of-print manga, they may not care that much.

They appear to have enabled doing that for any language, complete with a shim to translate the "serif" overlay, as they call it, into any other language (probably via Google Language). So there is a text overlay for a whole bunch of languages. I have just translated the first two pages into English as an experiment.

I'm playing around with it. You can set the language to English but it comes up as a really awkward overlay over the whole page. Neat, but not the best implementation for other languages. Might try playing with it more when I have more patience.

Apparently, they are still working on the viewer. One can only hope it gets better with time.
It wouldn't be too hard to allow the user to drag a box over the page and enter a translation there. Then the user could just hover the mouse over it to see the translation. But we take what we can take.
