This link was posted on Mangablog.net today, translating some online dicsussions between Ken Akamatsu, Minako Uchida, and Kazumi Tojo....

Akamatsu's comments are notable considering his own attempts at distributing his work online, and the site he's complaining about is actually an english language one hosted on Facebook. I suppose this means japanese creators are indeed noticing what fandom overseas is up to. This bit reacting to claims some fans make is pretty funny and sad- "jubeifang @KenAkamatsu This is completely true. Furthermore, some readers, believing the illegal scanslations to be the “original version”, demanded that an official translator correct his translation to match the pirate version. It’s seriously bad." The later parts of discussion on this show that apparently a whole bunch of people e-mailed VIZ (I assume, if it's an english edition) complaining about how something was translated in a Jump manga- I'm curious if they heard this from the comic's artist? As a cartoonist, I think it would be a pretty bizarre thing to get an email saying "All these people are saying how you want us to spell your characters name is wrong, and that these other folks who are ripping you off did it *right*, what do we do??" Anyhoo, surreal stuff to read. Interesting read, thanks Paploo.
I am not necessarily against any individual scanlating, but I am against the websites that provide it. They are making it harder for me to enjoy my hobby through the price of manga going up, or the lack of re-printing OOP titles. Personally, I like a physical collection rather than a digital one. Same reason I buy C.Ds and upload them onto itunes rather than downloading. |

Wow, that was a cool read. It's getting harder to make an honest living making manga these days. How can authors realistically compete with free??
And these scanlator sites, with minimal effort, post the years worth of an author's work in a mere manner of seconds, and then blatantly steal profit directly away from them through advertisements, and sometimes even subscription services. That's just wrong. It's unconscionable. And yet people help/promote these scanlator sites willingly, for the sake of convenience. Not very different from theft, or at least, being an accessory to a crime. People need to learn empathy. For the sake of the author's, who sacrifice normal lives to make this art. Who often don't leave their studios for months at a time, and have little of what would be considered a normal social life. And then, to add insult to injury, aren't paid for their efforts, but instead watch as others siphon their rightful profit away for their own selfishness, and who have the audacity to call it "righteous". One can only hope that the entitlement culture buckles under the weight of a prevailing sentiment of guilt, and the demands of a conscientious responsibility. But the zeitgeist has something else to say entirely...

It's just economics and incentives. When the marginal cost of reproducing something is virtually zero, the face price per unit is significantly higher than zero, and enforcement against it is difficult or impossible, you're always going to have people arbitraging the difference by reproducing the content and offering it at a lower price. |
