Like the name suggests, I would like to know if anyone has a favorite horror manga that they can recommend. There hasn't been too many great one coming out lately, but the republishing of Uzumaki later this month hopefully will revive interest.
On the subject of Uzumaki, I would recommend Gyo to anyone looking for a good horror reading. This two volume manga from the creator of Uzumaki really has little in common with it. Where as the feeling of terror in Uzumaki was conveyed through the feeling of isolation and faceing fear alone, Gyo is the opposite: a man is faced with a horrific invasion of the whole country, if not world, but strange sea creatures with legs. Sounds a bit chessy, but the art really makes the creatures repulsing and horrifying, and later does the same to an even greater degree with humans. The writing is perfect, and some of the images are truely shocking. Volume two also includes a short story which is great as well. While its not a traditional horror title, MPD Psycho has by far the most disturbing images I've ever seen and I could see that freaking the hell out of many people. |

Well, as I may have mentioned before I am new to manga I only have about 12 volumes. I wouldn't consider it horror but Hellsing is a great manga and alot of people like to throw it in the topic of horror. As for one I havn't read but hear is an excellent horror manga is Monster. Currently I am watching the anime (which I highly recommend) and it is purely awesome. On another board I read people's posts vaguely talking about the manga (which is not currently licensed for USA release) and people say it's really twisted. If you can get it anywhere (by downloading it or getting the japanese one, if you know japanese) then that would most likely be a good read.

The monster manga is better than the anime and a great series. One of the few thrillers that is really good.
I can't believe I forgot Parasite! This is such a great series. Even if you don't like horror the writing in it is so good that most people will like it. Was an old Mixx title (a company who wisely decided "Tokyopop" sounded more hip): http://tokyopop.com/dbpage.php?propertycode=PAR&categorycode=BMG Too bad it will never be reprinted... |

The only freaky thing about Arm of Kannon is that someone thought it was good enough to bring over here. |

That bad huh? I regret that companys licence crap like that and won't touch things like MPD Psycho because of its complex plot and the super disturbing pictures. Is it just me or does Tokyopop release alot of crappy seinen things (cept Planetes of course, but that is in theory for males in their twenties, which I have no idea what its called). |

It's not like...as bad as Evil's Return, but it's pretty stupid. Definitely not a horror manga. It amused me more than anything. I reviewed it a while back...and I believe I recycled it. ;

I bought "Arm of Kannon" cause it sounded interesting...
Anyway, I haven't really gotten too much into horror (usually just mutants that like to eat people - very messily at that), but I would recommend the manga adaptation of the Suzuki Koji novels, Ring and Spiral. Creepy. I like the original Japanese movies too! |

Did you read it and like it? Who knows...I am but one opinion in a sea of many. (oooh, I'm so poetic!) I read Animerica's review of Arm of Kannon and theirs was pretty positive. Then again, most of their reviews are. |

I absolutely loved Uzumaki when I picked it up. The art, as well as the story, was freakishly cool as well as inspiring for me *I intend to eventually write my own comics*. As a fan of Japanese horror movies for the past couple years, Uzumaki was a real treat. When people say the Japanese know horror, they do. It's not the icky teen movie slashy blood horror they have here. They have horror on a psychological level that I just love. I'm trying to get my hands on Gyo, but like most of Viz's older, bigger format releases now, it's hard to find.
I haven't picked up and tried any of the Ring manga yet. Anyone try it and get scared at all, or is it just ok in the horror-meter? Also, I know that there's a Silent Hill comic book in the works on this side of the Pacific, anyone know if there's a manga based on the Japanese videogame, or perhaps even a manga on the new videogame Siren? Silent Hill's games scare me senseless, and I'd love to get my hands on some travel-friendly version of their stories. |

I read the first volume of The Ring and wasn't impressed. The writing was mediocre and it never really created a feeling of anxiety or terror. I would recommend Gyo more if you wanted a good read.

I forgot to put Gantz on the list. Its many times better than the anime. The characters all examined realistically (easily some of the most human characters out there), and the general weirdness of it is definitally shocking. The monsters the characters have to face are all so bizarre and strange. Definitally a very twisted manga, but also a very good manga. The art is very nice too. Hopefully ADV will import it now that they have licenced the anime (believe me when I say its inferior).
This has nothing to do with manga, but the Milkman Murders is a great horror (sort of) title from Darkhorse comics that definitally has a weird, almost Fargo-like vibe going for it. |

I can't believe I forgot Domu Shame on me, shame! I'm sure many of you have heard of this one volume work from the legendary Katsuhiro Otomo, and its among my all time favorite mangas. Domu has some scary scenes and horrific images, but whats truely disturbing about the story is its portrail of innocence and children. Rather than the cute and sometimes stupid characters children are often portrayed as, Domu poses a much darker, thought provoking question: what happens when people who have not yet developed strong morals and have yet to understand the consiquences of their actions have powerful telekenisis? The associations of innocence with evil are very intruiging (as well as some of the social issues displayed), and the manga is so well written and has such amazing art. This is a true classic, and in many ways a blueprint to Akira (personally I like Domu more than Akira).
This was a very important manga because it was the first one (and only one to my knowlege, but correct me if I'm wrong) to win a major award for litterature. It was a science fiction of the year award, called the Science Fiction Grand Prix, and competeing against other novels, not manga, Domu won in 1983. Just like what would happen years later when The Sandman won a litterary award, snobs made a big fuss and claimed it was a weak year for SciFi litterature. But many critics came to Domu's defense, including one of Japan's most popular and well respected writers, Sakyo Komatsu. In any case, this would get my pick for the best horror manga out there, as well as generally one of the best mangas. |

liancoop:
I didn't care for it. It was twisted and depraved more than scary (pretty normal I guess...). Didn't grab my attention. Kagemusha:
Like I said. Ring and Spiral are creepy, not terror inspiring....but again, very little actually is... As far as the original Japanese movies, I thought they were a great change away from general Hollywood 'fright tactics'. Id rather be creeped out that roll my eyes when the badguy jumps out when you expect him to... |
