Before GATSU's soapbox rant about Inception copied off Paprika the last time this happen, it's nice to see that DGA see the Paprika-Inception comparison nod.

If GATSU is reading this, if you're going to attack Inception because of it's similarities to Paprika, then attack these also:

The Matrix-this film took influence from Ghost in the Shell and Cyberpunk anime, Hong Kong Bloodshed, and Wuxia Kung-Fu.

Star Wars-Wasn't Episode 4 borrow a lot of Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress. Are you going to hate Star War because of that?

Oh, and before somebody throw in the ol "Asian don't pretend it's their own" BS. Please recall:

-China creating Orange Gundam and claim it was not from a anime and claim it's their own.
-China rip-off Macross and Gundam with their animation, Astro Plan. Does that look like they pretend it's not their own. 2 characters in Astro Plan resemble characters from Gundam 00.
-China making knock-off game console like the Polystation and Chintendo Viiand claim it's their own.
-South Korea ripped off Team Fortress 2, and Portal. They claim it's their own game and never acknowledge Valve.
-Anybody heard of Space Gundam V? Yeah South Korea sort of claim it's their own animation and illegally used Macross mecha in there without permission from Japan. I think this poster explain for itself.



-Don't think Japan can never rip-off thing because I recall an eroge game that rip-off 2 hearts. Here's a picture to back this up:

Interesting article. I haven't seen 'Inception' but I will soon. I saw 'Black Swan'. I enjoyed it and yeah you could say it's definitely got over tones that makes it Satoshi Kon material.

Also, watching some pop anime with dub is not being a "professed anime fan".

Satoshi Kon is rather influential. He's like Hayao Miyazaki only without all the enviromental crap that can often be seen in Miyazaki's films. It's no surprise that someone like Nolan and Aronofsky would be familiar.

That is true, but in the past there have been American animated series that ripped off Japanese anime, and nobody complained about them. China is not the only ones guilty of this.

Not everyone is ripping off anime in Hollywood. Anime is not as important to Hollywood as it is to us. Plus, if Hollywood really appreciated anime, that Speed Racer, Dragon Ball Evolution and Astro Boy wouldn't have sucked so bad. I agree with your latter comment though. DiCaprio may know of some pop anime (with a dub) but it's probably the obvious (like Miyazaki). I don't think he is a professed anime fan either, or I am a werewolf.

Do remember that both "Perfect Blue" and "Black Swan" are plays on the themes of Dostoevsky's "The Double". Before people fire off shots about "copying" do your research first.

Meanwhile in actual awards nomination news, Cat Shit One: The Animated Series received a nomination for the Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Short award at the 9th Annual Visual Effects Society Awards.

Well beside:

Frankenstein Jr- Hanna Barbera's animation had some nod to Tetsujin 28/Gigantor.

The Lion King-Being accused of stealing thing from Kimba which is still subjective because Disney has denied this a lot.

Atlantis: The lost Empire: Anime fan have said this film carried similarities to Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, and some have accused Disney for ripping off that series.

What other American cartoon have ripped off anime? I only listed 3 that have well inspired or ripped off (it subjective) by it. I will agree a lot of country rip-off stuff, I know country that have rip-off American stuff.

...This article is made of so much win my eyes are brimming with tears.

First of all, this just put Paprika on the very top of my watchlist. Inception is just the best movie ever.

Second, it deserves the award and I'm sooo happeh it's getting it. I think my director for my last play is in the Directors' Guild...or was it something else?...Either way, YESH!

Third, WHERE WAS I WHEN LEO DID LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATIONS WTH. *checks links* Akira and Ninja Scroll? Man. At first I thought the fact that he was a meme made him unbelievably awesome.

Fourth, HE'S AN ANIME FAN?!!! Watchu talkin' 'bout, Willis? *clicks & reads* Oh. Wut now. Miyazaki fanboys FTW.

Fifth...the main character of Paprika is Ariadne? Cool!

it's hilarious how people are so persistent on associating "copying" or "taking inspirations from" with such negative connotations.. it's rather the part of consistent denial that is most curious rather than some paranoid reaction of directors and some of you fanboys in trying so hard to run away from the "copying" phrase before people even mention anything negative associated with it

i guess the argument has degraded now to "well, everybody has done it"

the first post even broadens the act of copying to a whole race of people to justify an argument when these acts are meaningless when not examined on an individual to individual basis.. by the same logic, why not expand copying to the whole humankind

Fine, I'll be "neutral", dammit!

mdo: You seem to forget that the Wachowskis actually gave credit where it was due on GITS. And that was back when anime was still considered porn and still on VHS. But GITS was obviously a different beast, as that was basically the anime you got people to see to get into anime back then. Plus, it would've been impossible for them to pretend otherwise, anyway, because they used the same effing font alone from GITS. As for Star Wars, George has never shied away from being a Kurosawa fan, and even co-produced one of his movies. In fact, rumour has it he originally wanted Toshiro Mifune as Obi-Wan. Meanwhile, the only thing Kon fans want is for Nolan and Darren to just mention him in passing, at least, because it's in bad form to watch him die and then not give him his due, when he clearly had some influence on their work.

As for China, well, they gave us fireworks, Journey to the West, and martial arts, so they can come up their own material once in a while, too. And South Koreans are still better at MMORPGs than Japanese programmers. Oh, and Stealth "borrowed" from Macross too, but no one complained about that. Sure, maybe it's cus the director admitted it, and 'cus no one would actually want to be associated w/ Stealth in the first place, but it's not a big deal because everyone knows it's a knock-off of something, even if they've never seen Macross anything. It's when people start calling Black Swan and Inception "original" which gets my goat, because even if Kon didn't influence those films, we've obviously seen them before in some form or another. Furthermore, the fact that their narratives actually go the conventional route, when there's potential to take the concepts in a different direction, is also frustrating. But that's a different complaint. As for eroge, what part of hentai doesn't use unauthorized character designs? Rolling Eyes Oh, and you forgot Hellsing and Von Helsing. A Geneon rep told me the manga-ka for that series was pissed that the latter film used his art.

But Kon still did the modern update first, while Darren's movie resembles Kon's interpretation more than the original book.

jstellar: It's legit, but it's kind of shady all the same, because you don't know whether or not Kon actually pocketed any of that money, or it went to a middle-man. Plus, considering Swan's on its way to $70+ million domestic alone, it sounds like a one-sided deal to me.
