I don't think there was ever any official announcement about an Animax channel in the UK. IIRC there was some excitement about Animax opening a UK office some time ago, but it turned out to be just as a base of operations for their broadcasting in Europe. The last speculation I remember reading about it was on the AUKN forums here:

The followup that you posted in talkback, before your duplicate posting got locked for being a duplicate posting and for not being a talkback thread, kind of answered the question:
Quote:
and secondly animax have said further details emerged on Animax's launch details in the United Kingdom, with Sony Pictures Television International senior-vice president of international networks Ross Hair being quoted by Brand Republic's Media Week as stating that Sony was preparing to launch Animax in the United Kingdom initially as a video on demand service alongside other Sony television networks, with Sony also looking at launching Animax across the free digital television service Freeview subject to new frequencies and slot being available.
(BTW, that's via Wikipedia if its not clear) ...

... "negotiations are at an advanced stage" implies that at the time of writing, March 2007, they were still negotiating.

In October of 2007, it was
Quote:
... but the company is weighing up plans for their introduction into the UK on an on-demand basis.
... which means they were deciding whether to pursue that option, so by October 2007 the negotiations described in March of 2007 had fallen through. (Media Week

The basic problem was laid out in the discussion with Media Week;
Quote:
Ross Hair, senior vice-president of international networks for Sony Pictures Television International, said: "The UK is a very crowded market with lots of niches already well served. But we will bring these channels to the UK first as VoD services."

So altogether, no linear channel before VOD, and don't hold your breath for VOD.

Sony decided to replace film 24 to AXN in2011 and ignore Animax coming to the U.K because the demand for Anime is low in U.K and they may probably have an Anime block because of failures from Anime central, CNX and rapture in the U.K of Anime, but i'm not entirely sure if they may have a seperate channel for Animax which is coming soon, but ATX is gonna replace film 24 for sure in early 2011.

First: Czechslovakia doesn't exist anymore.

Second: If Animax in UK is going to start after they begin in Poland you have to be patient, because here rumours about Animax have been thrilling fandom since... hmm... 2005? Now it seems that sooner we will get DBZ Kai dubbed and released on BR here. Wiki says that becouse of financial problems of channel's owner all work had been stopped till at least 2014.

if it has been stopped till 2014 i'm gonna kill them they spread news saying oh 'we are going to launch Animax in united Kingdom under the section Europe after Germany it should indicate that's it pretty soon but i'm thinking when they release AXN in U.K which is eary 2011 and if that get's kinda popular they may release Animax in mid 2011 or late 2011 depending on the situation because they are eventually going to release the channel as they said now targeting United Kingdom, France and Italy and Poland it's going to come slowly but gradually better be freeview channel or i'll shoot them lol. i don't think it's Poland who will get Animax before U.K because under Europe it mainly mentions about U.K getting the channel first and when you read under Poland it say's the network will also air in Poland following on other similar expansions around Central and Eastern Europe which is probably after U.K get it.

* I mean CzechRepublic

Whats held them back isn't because there is a weak anime audience in the UK; there is as our conventions prove every year with increased attendances. It's down to availability of satellite transponder channel slots for our regional footprint. All sats are fully booked. Sony has been looking for at least three channels and weren't going to modulate to us until they did. But it looks like they have been keeping their eye's on some opportunities and have made a purchase of 1 channel on our Sky's EPG which are active sat channels, so there's hope. Stay tuned as they say. Wink

It's still Film24 on the channel ID and when did they say an anime channel would be first? Sony as a large catalogue of live action movies too you know, which was one of the three channels they wanted to start. Wink

i see your point but it's one of the bottom rank channels that they are deciding to put on Sky after the movie channels

The stories cited in Wikipedia never quoted a Sony executive or spokesperson on committing to any of them coming at all at any set date, just on that sequence in the unspecified time that they did come.

You have to, first, read the quotes carefully, because the Japanese are masters as saying "maybe" instead of yes or no, and, second, avoid taking the interpretations of journos or wikipedia contributors of those quotes too seriously.

They did say that that the channels would be coming to the UK as VOD first, and linear after depending on availability of channels, but remember that is a description of plans circa late 2007.

When they said they were in negotiations to come to the UK, there is no guarantee there that the negotiations will succeed. When they said they were weighing their options, there is no guarantee there that they will end up including an AnimaxUK among the options that they actively pursue.

And if they think the anime market is weaker now than they thought in 2007, there's no guarantee that all of these three year old news stories are still relevant today.

So, the only chance for Anime to survive in the U.K is AXN having an Anime block on their channel, but it won't happen probably because all anime content is moved to Animax.
