As someone who's never seen Card Captor Sakura, or any other CLAMP title, is this even worth watching? Is it something only CLAMP fans can appreciate, or is it self-contained enough for newbies?

After that, is the show good? I like drama and romance, and I like action as long as it isn't DBZ or Claymore style action. Is this show worth checking out?

Tsubasa Chronicle is a good seress, I've never seen Card Captor Sakura either, but you can enjoy it. The anime really toned down the violence compared to the manga, but it does have nice action scenes but it's not too long like DBZ or gory violent like Claymore, the anime was made for kids so almost all the blood that is in the manga is taken out, but after the second season, the OVAs follow the manga and have all the blood and more violence than the series, but nothing crazy like Claymore level gore.

It does have romance or drama if you enjoy that sort of thing.

As someone who owns the series, I would say if you're expecting something like DBZ or Claymore, Tsubasa is not that type of anime, but the story is very well done, but you should probably get it off Netflix before deciding wither to buy it, blind buy it right now at RightStuf and you might enjoy it, it's definitely a lot of fun, but might not be what you're expecting.

Thanks, mglittlerobin.

My problem with Claymore wasn't the gore, it was that the combatants seemed more occupied with talking than actually fighting. I know some people like that, and it's been explained to me that it's a way of reducing the amount of money spent on fancy combat animation, but it still irritates me so much that I find these types of shows unwatchable.

I was wondering if Tsubasa or X would be my best entry into CLAMP.

I have seen, and enjoyed both Tsubasa and xxxHolic. I think I would recommend Tsubasa as your first try - it is a little less 'quirky' than Holic and both seasons are available in English, while only the first season of Holic is available dubbed. Then again, you might not care about that.

As for the talking parts, all the dialogue is important in Tsubasa so it's not for skimping on fight scenes. I have started X as well and it's good, but I haven't finished it yet so I can't tell you if it's a good first Clamp title to see, but Tsubasa Chronicles is a lot of fun.

The Anime was awful. I would definitely recommend that you read the manga instead. Even CLAMP themselves were not impressed with the Anime.

If you love drama, you will LOOOOOVE Tsubasa. Everything from Acid Tokyo onwards is dripping with angst.

It would be preferable if you watched a few CLAMP series first, but you really don't need to watch them to understand the series. You might want to read xxxHolic along with Tsubasa, but unlike xxxHolic, it's not necessary to read the other series to understand what's going on.

Tsubasa is more about adventure than action, unlike DBZ and Claymore. I wouldn't go for it if action is what I'm after.
Take one of the protagonists for example, he really hardly does anything besides the good old expert dodging, since his magic is sort of sealed (the fact that it's sealed isn't a spoiler, but the reason behind it is).
The art is quite weird at first (like when he's running with Sakura, but in reality it looks like he's running while carrying a body pillow of Sakura), but once you get used to it it's really great.
The past of the characters is somewhat touching. I think I've missed the most recent OVA, but I feel we're still missing a fair chunk of Fai's past, while the other protagonists had well developed pasts, primarily Kurogane.

Tsubasa is a good start. At least out of X, and Holic, that should be the easiest to understand, and the one with the least Clamp's common knowledge requirement (at least until later on). Bear in mind that there's a lot of reference to other Clamp anime later on; mainly X. While there will be Holic crossover. Regardless, I wouldn't say it's truly necessary to have seen either.

No you don't need to have seen any previous Clamp works to enjoy the basic story or understand it, as it explains enough, but seeing X, Chobits, and Cardcaptor Sakura would certainly help you get all the character cameos. I don't know if it would work really well as a "first Clamp series" though, as I'd previously seen Chobits, and X TV before I watched it. I hadn't seen any Cardcaptor Sakura though and I did alright following it. Recently I saw the CS movie though.

Tsubasa is good but not outstanding or anything. It's also not for the impatient as it tends to drag like dead body, especially the second half. The anime is unfinished/not fully adapted if that kind of thing bothers you. It does to me. I had trouble finishing it the first go 'round because it was just so boring and pacing was so awful, and this coming from a really patient person by the way. I just ended up dropping it for a while and picking it up a few years later and finishing it dubbed where it was much easier on my patience.

Personally, I'd take Chobits, XXXHolic, or X TV over this show, but that's a matter of opinion.

If you are searching for something with action, then Tsubasa Chronicle is an awful choice. There is a lot of talking that contributes nothing or next to nothing to the plot, because it usually consists of vague hints sporadically thrown here and there, most of which are not explained in the TV series anyway. There is no action there, there is not even a lot of movement in this show. And half of each episode is wasted to show the main Mary Sues’…….. I mean, characters’ face in close-up. Action is only present in the OADs, but you will have to watch around 45 episodes of TV series to know what is going on in the OADs.

X is a better option. It has more action, though if I remember correctly not too much, and an ending. Do you realize that Tsubasa Chronicle in the anime form has no ending? Even if you watch the OADs, you will have to read the manga to know how it ends. And I don’t recommend it, because the last chapters of Tsubasa Chronicle are one big dull mess.

I highly recommend both Tsubasa Chronicle TV series to people who suffer from insomnia.

In the manga there are two arcs that are skipped in the OADs. There is Tokyo arc - Infinity arc - Celes arc - Nihon arc. The first OAD, Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations, is about Tokyo arc, the second, Tsubasa: Shunraiki, is about Nihon arc. Fai's past is revealed in Celes arc. You will have to read the manga if you want to know it.

Thanks, everyone. I'll skip it, for being incomplete and poorly paced.

Guess I'll check out X.

You should at least try it out. Don't drop any money yet though. I'm sure you could find a couple legal episodes to stream sample somewhere. The show kinda grew on me after a couple episodes. It's no masterpiece but it is a fun adventure (especially if you can appreciate all the cameos)

Forget Tsubasa, if you haven't seen Cardcaptor Sakura, go and watch that. Probably my favourite CLAMP work and one of my favourite animes.

There are many far better CLAMP anime out there than Tsubasa. Like Angelic Layer (cute/heartwarming, gets emotional/dramatic), Magic Knight Rayearth (oldschool fantasy adventure, with mechas and a few twists), Cardcaptor Sakura (long and shows its "gotta catch 'em all" and monster-of-the-week roots, but still an endearing show), X (great action and pretty good angst), or xxxHolic (character-based comedy interlaced with dark folktale supernatural elements). Tsubasa is... well, if you've seen other works from the same studio (Bee Train), director (Koichi Mashimo), and composer (Yuki Kajiura), you may know what to expect. Sloooow pacing, lots of "stand around talking" scenes, interminable camera pans across still images, and sleep-inducing music. Think Noir, Madlax, .hack//Anything, or Avenger*.

In short, Aylinn's insomnia recommendation is on the money, and you're probably right to skip it.

* Not Yuki Kajiura, but most of the same characteristics apply.
