Lets show what this means with statistics.
For the sake of argument, lets presume all otakus are under the age of 65. Going on the 2002 census (the latest I could find), there are 103.8 million people under the age of 65. With 2.8 million "otaku" in Japan, that means that about 2.8% of the Japanese population under the age of 65 are anime fiends. .. Japan has just became a scarier place to me. [This post can easily be taken out of context and not to be used for a scientific means] |

No, these are not Casual fans. These are the scary fanboys and Fangirls. The ones who write Yaoi fan fics, the type that buy Chi body pillows, the ones who bid on Ebay for their idols used socks. Of course this also just includes the 'hardcores' that spend time and effort on stuff like anime bbs, and have fairly large collections or attempts at such. As we know, anime is more expensive then Crack, and so the habit gets large quickly.

The statistics said. I rounded a average anime dvd 40.00 in japan. They buy one every 2 week. It's like the nascar fanatics they spend much more compared to us anime watching people.

2.8 million Otaku? As in the creepy, pale, non-hygenic live in their parents basement at age 30 Otaku? *shudders* I wonder what that number would be in the U.S.? We are probably lazier then the Japanese *look at the diffrence in schooling systems* but I wonder where we would rank on a national scale. Makes you think |

Youre a debate, aren't you Proz512...
*imagines over 65 yr old otakus in their parents' basements...and shudders* 2.8 mil...I bet the real number's more...after all, there are probably many otaku who won't admit that they are (and that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't true otaku...) I imagine that America has its share of otakufreaks...not with anime, but with Star Trek and Star Wars and LOTR (^^) and whatever...quite possibly more than Japan, as scary as that sounds. My guess is, however, that they aren't writing the yaoi fics. |

I guess a good video to watch is Otaku no Video that AnimEigo sells. A rather funny, but sometimes disturbing look at otakudom.

I guess you'd have to be a "creepy otaku" to shell out as much as the Japanese do for their DVDs =) Gotta be a bit wrong in the head to accept those prices, I tell ya.

Well, they weren't all Anime Otaku. The study also didn't look at other Otaku groups, such as the "gun Otaku" that were somewhat featured in Otaku no Video. So the total number of Otaku in Japan is probably much higher... |

Uhhh.... let's not stereotype. Not all otaku are smelly and look bad. Let's settle down now kids...
But still, that's a pretty sizable number there. I don't know if I should take that as a good or bad sign. Perhaps I should take it as a sign of the culture. They like their fan stuffs. Idol-crazed culture, whatever the idol may be, fictional or not. :/ If you could call it that. |

According to the article, that 2.8 million figure is an estimate by the Nomura Research Institute. I'm very curious about how they arrived at those numbers (something glossed over in the article) as well as who commissioned the report in the first place.

For some reason, I see them all looking like this (I warn you, its a graphic depiction of an Otaku)-http://catsonmars.com/otaku/anatomy-frames.html
And its pretty disturbing too that there are otaku who dedicate their lives to insulting other otaku (look around on the site and you'll understand). I will never understand... |

I don't think any of us ever will understand. But in either case, we should start a National Bathing Campaign!
Don't be French! Bathe daily with Evangelion Soap! And I know I just used the French stereotype. It's a pun. :P So sue me. |
