Deserves to be too Gundam Unicorn is awesome, albeit expensive but worth it if your a fan of old school Gundam.

That's something that I'm curious about. Unfortunately, it's probably safe to say that sales in the US won't get anywhere near 81,000.

I can't imagine it's doing too stellar in the states. The UC Gundam fanbase over here is already kinda small. Then ya gotta discount those who don't have Blu-ray players. Then ya gotta subtract those who imported it because the US release didn't come with the exclusives. Then ya gotta subtract those who were turned off by the still very high price. Finally, ya gotta remember that this release is only limit to two stores that are both online, so there's almost zero chance that a casual consumer will buy, let alone even physically see the BD.
For the record, I own the first two volumes, and I'm not happy with paying close to Japanese prices and not getting exclusives...

You also forget that the author Harutoshi Fukui is quite popular in Japan having his Shusen no Lorelei novel get made into a movie. The reason most westerners have never heard of him is because Fukui's past work is known for glorifying Imperial Japan.

I remember reading about the Lorelei movie years ago. Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino supposedly has a cameo or some minor role in it. Didn't realize it was Fukui's baby though.

This isn't the first time you've brought it up either, so I'll acknowledge that it's a valid observation. The thing is, it's hard to measure how much of that is actually relevant in this particular case. I suspect it's not the most important variable though.
Why? First off, because the author's past works have little or nothing to do with Gundam Unicorn in terms of subject matter, setting or format. I can't speak for his entire body of work but an obvious parallel appears to be missing, don't you think? Nothing I've seen in Unicorn so far seems to be remotely related to what you've described, unless we want to make rather forced comparisons.
Second, his novels and movies are most likely far more popular than Gundam Unicorn in terms of sales, readers and viewers. Only a fraction of those would have overlapping interests with anime fans. If anything, you'd expect hundreds of thousands of initial sales, as a minimum, at least if you're assuming the author's previous fame is one of the main factors involved in the popularity of this OVA.
I wouldn't argue that influence is necessarily irrelevant, no, but it's not inherently overwhelming either. It's, admittedly, another part of the same equation.
