Have you ever found yourself unexpectedly talking about anime when you least expected it?
That happened to me one New Year's holiday when I was at a (closed) Greyhound bus station just outside of Detroit waiting for a very late bus on a chilly evening when I noticed a guy in his late teens / early twenties with a long, red coat..... with the same design on the back as a certain height-challenged (I want to be politically correct here!  ) state-certified alchemist. He was a college student heading back -- if I recall correctly -- to metropolitan Boston after having spent the holiday with his girlfriend.
The resulting conversation helped pass the time. EDIT: Oh, I forgot -- I was taking an MS Windows & hardware class when I noticed that the student next to me had a "Death Note" notebook. Well, I own a bunch of anime shirts for stuff like Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Hell Girl, Hellsing, Noir, Witch Hunter Robin etc. and wear them a lot so I don't exactly make a secret of the fact I'm a fan. It's been known to happen once in a while.
I just wish it happened more often with women instead of guys..... |

Happened once at my old job. The guy I was working with just happened to start up a conversation about 80's TV and it went off from there.

A short discussion before class started a few days ago might fit if manga with an anime adaption fits. I was talking to a student who sits next to me and she randomly noticed my Hell Girl phone straw dolls. (Like this one only I have all three.)
So she asked me if I liked manga (guess she's not heard of anime?) and I said yes and she told me her sister's a big Hetalia fan and even showed me some cosplay pics of her. It wasn't a very long conversation since literally it was right before class started but it was just so out of the blue that I think it unquestionably works as an "unexpectedly discussing" moment. Not sure what her opinion of manga/anime is in general but she seemed very not disturbed considering the horror stories I've read here from people who get teased about their fandom. Did I mention the young lady in question is rather lovely too? @ Kruszer: Envy me!

I have worked alot of odd jobs in my time and at one point during training to become an exterminator (they get paid surprisingly well) my supervisor asked me "so what do you know about exterminating insects". Thinking I would be clever by making a reference there was no way this grizzled 30 year old would understand I replied "only what I learned from blue gender, gotta shoot em in the core". This guy's face lit up, he was so excited to have someone to talk to anime about and in fact I am still friends with that guy to this day

"Grizzled 30 year old"? LOL, I'm almost 40, guess I'm ancient by your standards. Yes, we older fans exist. You young folk think it's hard finding people who like anime, imagine trying to find someone my age who likes, much less has heard of anime. I had a few unexpected discussions myself, though I can't think of any particular incident at the moment. Must be getting old!

When walking past a tea room in a nearby spa town, I came across a fellow donning a Principality of Zeon jacket. I made sure to inform him of my approval of this, by uttering (amongst other things) a two-word phrase familiar to all Gundam fans.

It's happen alot to me before (because I have a friend who talks about nothing but anime) but I have caught a glimpse or two of someone wearing a shirt or jacket of an anime, and I will think "YES! Another fan who'll i'll never see again!"

I once saw a bloke in a pub in North Wales wearing a very cool t-shirt featuring a cutout of the eyes and forehead of Rally Vincent (Gunsmith Cats-anime style). I said "Cool! Rally Vincent!"
It turned out he had no idea what was on his shirt, and had bought it at Camden market because it looked cool. That was an unexpected but very short anime conversation. |

In virtue of the market's popularity amongst followers of fashion, I suspect this brief statement could be given as the explanation behind almost any purchase made there. (When last I visited, I bought a young coconut from which to drink. I wasn't particularly thirsty.) |

On the day of a convention, I decided to stop by Universal Studios (it was literally like 2 miles from the hotel and the convention center) to hop on a coaster. I have an annual pass, so it was no big deal to go for just a few minutes. I was just getting off of the hulk when two girls ran up to me, one screaming at the top of her lungs about how much she loved Full Metal Panic. That's about when I remembered that I was wearing the spring uniform from the series. I hadn't really thought anything about wearing the shirt and skirt (minus Kaname's wig of course) into the theme park because I left the red bow off. To me, it wasn't really an outfit that would make me stand out and I didn't really think anyone would be looking for it.
It was kinda funny. We chatted for a few hours about anime and went on rides together. They weren't even in town for the convention. *shrugs* |

I really need to a) get more anime apparel and b) wear it more often. I would love for someone to randomly come up and talk with me. Most of my conversations aren't unexpected unless a casual anime/manga fan at my school knows some niche show/series that I love.
Maybe that'll change in college I dunno. |

There have been two occasions where my conversation has suddenly become about anime for some weird reason. The first time this happened was when i was at one of my TAFE classes. I would expect this from a student, but the person i was discussing it with was my lecturer, a lady in her late 50's - early 60's (and my subject is law, not anything approaching anime).
Some how we got onto the subject of the process by which cartoons are made, and i mentioned the extra's that where on the Kanon individual DVD's that showed the process, and she actually knew what i was talking about. Turns out her son was in the navy, so he had brought some anime home from japan now and then. Second occasion wasnt like it was in an unlikley place (a shop devoted to wargames, nerd central) but just the way it evolved was unexpected. We where halfway through a large 6 person game of warhammer 40,000, and all of a sudden we where having a big, loud group discussion concerning the evangelion movie. We never did finish that game... |
