it is nice to see there are some ladies who like us crazy otaku, and are willing to date us, I would love to find someone who like watching anime as much as me, but it is hard since I am not in my early 20's,

Well otaku need their loving too. It's interesting to see that there were more females applied than I though there would be. Anyways, I guess there are some females who are more tolerant to some ways of the otaku. |

What I wouldn't give to hear all the creepy stories from those people who attended. (c'mon, you know theres gotta be a few)
I also wonder how many people actually hooked up and are now in a relationship with each other. ah well, this is still an uplifting story I think, proof that not all japanese otaku are into fabricated women alone, like people automatically assume. |

Okay, I know this getting a ton of flack as being pathetic and such, but I actually found it to be a good idea. I know as an otaku that society doesn't tend to accept people like us...or least where I live. Sounds like Japan's just trying to take small step toward making people like me feel more welcome in the world. It'd be nice if they organized this type of thing for high schoolers.
Only 115 females? Aw, that's sad. But I guess they made a pretty decent profit from all the men that'll show up. |

Now if only they could bring this event to New Jersey and if only every anime fangirl I have ever seen wasn't completely awful.
Edit: I should also say "heard" was awful too. Anybody who has ever been through a dealer room and walked past a booth selling yaoi knows exactly what I am talking about. |

Call me a cynic, but I'm betting a good number of those applicants, male and female, were fans of K-ON!, wanting to participate (like if George Lucas held some similar event at Sky Walker) more than actually looking for "love."
Further, I don't hold out much hope for "love" coming out of this publicity stunt (although, I congratulate the town for making the anime work for them, to bring in tourist money). Japanese Otaku aren't exactly social butterflies, or, how shall I say this... Good with the ladies. Oh, how fun would it be NOT to be an a fly on that awkward dating disaster wall. And as for so many ladies, I think, again, the majority are K-ON! fans with the odd Christmas Cake or serial killer. This whole thing reminds me of a skit on MadTV about a Online dating service called "Lowered Expectations." |

Yes, but those girls usually aren't old enough to even attend Yaoi Con, and usually don't have the money to actually buy what they are screaming about. Female anime fans are out there, and some of us are very nice people too. But most of us won't go anywhere near a Con, or if they are like me, are not looking for a boyfriend or husband since they have one already. That being said, I really don't see how this type of meet-up would actually result in a marriage. There are many different types of "otaku". The romantic in me likes to think of a couple of obsessive "train otaku" meeting each other and making a strong connection over their common interest. But I don't really see the eroge or otome game otaku doing the same. |

Avoiding to look at the numbers is like trying to look away from a car accident. I mean the numbers stick out like a sore thumb.

I think the issue is that there are really two types of anime fangirls, and they tend to be divided at least partially on an age line (though not always). There are the awful, loud, obnoxious, think-I'm-so-damn-cute usually between 12-17 set, and then the older fangirls who have either partially grown out of their obsession (and been downgraded, therefore, just to regular old "fan--" these rarely go to cons, etc), or at the very least become mature enough to NOT be a raving lunatic. However, the problem here is that these quieter, usually older girls tend to (a) be older, so if you're a young otaku guy, well you're probably out of luck, (b) be normal enough to already *have* a significant other, and therefore not be interested in you or (c) come off as so normal you don't know they're fans and therefore don't necessarily see them as potential mates. Even the yaoi set, believe it or not. I myself fall into the "b," category (my boyfriend isn't even really much of an anime fan, and the last game system he bought was a PS2... I've geeked him up a little, but we didn't find each other through fandom, we just happened to be two normal people who became attracted to each other through normal routes), and I am yaoi fan, but I also don't squee and I don't try to make anyone else like it and I don't expect others to like it. I mean, seriously, if my boyfriend wants to watch lesbian porn, no one's going to call him a weirdo, so why should I be called a weirdo for wanting to read gay manga? It's only weird once you make it a lifestyle-- ZOMG YAOI 4EVA ST8 BOIS SUCK -- although I was also never an obnoxious teenage girl because I was raised not to be an idiot or an asshole and most kids these days are, well, not. I'm also an older fan, and that helps-- it seems like the "Fruits Basket? That's like ANCIENT" (Jesus Christ, seriously) crowd is just WAY worse than my anime "generation." That, or I'm just turning into an old biddy. But basically, my advice is to talk to normal-seeming girls and see if you can "infect" them with some geekiness rather than assume that your best bet is another otaku, because that's patently untrue. You can't have a meaningful relationship with someone based solely on your shared love of Japanese animation. Or, wait until the girls grow up a little. Most teenage girls eventually stop being teenage girls, and it's only the ones who don't that you need to watch out for (you know the type, the 35 year old obese woman dressed as Haruhi with six sets of cat ears hare hare yukai-ing at everyone who goes by-- yeah, that's awful. Won't argue with you there.) |

I think this is a good thing since its hard enough to be in a situation once you're out of highschool to meet random people of the opposite sex.
They need to do this more often to be honest. |
