Vinyl, yes it's made a comeback. I've got my Yamaha turntable next to me right now, part of my computer / near field sound setup. Here's hoping that Jon & Tiger Lab has great success.

I love collecting records, but I feel like I'm too unfamiliar with 80s OVAs to be interested in this stuff. Now if they could get Akira like the article mentioned, that would be cool (though I believe the soundtrack has been released on vinyl at some point).

It would be great to see something by Yoko Kanno, like Macross Plus or Escaflowne. Though from the sounds of what he said, there going more on fondly remembered soundtracks, quality be dammed.

I already signed up for a subscription, but now I have a better idea of what kind of titles theyre looking at for their next three planned soundtracks. I love collecting anime soundtracks on vinyl and I hope this does well for them. Id also love to hope their projects would open doors to people who want to release more mainstream anime soundtracks from the late 80's and up so I can fill in big gaps of my collection.

Well, this would only be good to those that actually have a turn table. Or should I say, a record player. Or maybe a phonograph provided it works. This is a nice comeback. I wouldn't mind owning this but I don't own any of these relics of the past.

Record players aren't exactly hard to find brand new. Your local Target, Best Buy, or even Wal-Mart likely has some sort of CD/record/cassette player combo; some even let you rip the audio from a vinyl onto either a CD or mp3 format. As for the Wicked City vinyl, I really like the concept of giving old OSTs releases over here via a method that matches the niche market it's aimed towards. I haven't seen the OVA myself, but I think it would be a cool collectible for any fan of it, regardless of it the person has a record player or not. Maybe Tiger Lab will one day release the OST to something I've seen & am a fan of, but I wish them the best of luck. |

I hardly see the point of picking a random anime movie not even known for its great soundtrack and putting it on a music format almost nobody uses anymore. It's almost too hipster for words.

Vinyl's actually been seeing a strong upswing in the past few years, & not just in the US (it's just the strongest over here). Sure, the overall numbers it's selling nowadays aren't exactly barn busters, but where a medium like CDs have been slowly declining in sales, vinyl sales have actually gone up. It could be the retro appeal, the overall aesthetic, or even some hipster chic, but it's not like vinyl is exactly dead now; if anything, it's revived somewhat. As for why Wicked City was chosen, I think the interview explains it perfectly: Dobyns has a personal attachment to it, much like I'm sure everyone has something that they enjoy but isn't exactly something most would immediately think of. Limiting production to only 1,000 is smart, too, I'd say. |

It doesn't have "Hold Me in the Shadow"? Shame.

Vinyl sales rare bright spot for US music industry
Big turnout on Record Store Day shows rebirth of vinyl For first time, digital music matches physical sales
How popular is vinyl in Japan anyways? And Wicked City - that's kinda hentai! Just a warning. |

I'm surely happy to see records making a comeback. I hope this one sticks. If I could,I'd get my own record player. Again,I'm very happy about this.

This seems like a misguided release, especially since the original OVA is long since out of print. Not really sure if the score warrants a heavy vinyl pressing but I guess that just adds to the novelty. Bummer there's no liner notes though. Too bad the couldn't get the original artwork for the Japanese version. That said, I'd pickup a copy.

Oh I know. They have turn tables that give you that vintage feel, and they have more tech savvy ones that hook up to your computer so you can rip stuff and digitally burn it to a CD. Thing is I can't see myself buying a turn table, but...maybe I should consider as I do own vinyl. So in a way I can see this as sort of a fun throwback for fans. So if they can pull it off I salute them. |

I have to be a thosguy and say that the Communications Major in me found this guy's speech pattern to be really erratic; along with that statement, however, I really like this idea. I have been doing alot of research on anime Laserdiscs in the last few months, and vinyl is undoubtedly on the rise. Very, very cool to have a company specializing in a niche market like this. I'll dust off the JVC and eagerly check out their catalog.

I was baited by the Wicked City thumbnail. For shame.
