Fans around the world are joining together to help provide some aid and relief for the victims of Japan's earthquake & tsunami disasters, and I wanted to highlight some of them, so here's a bonus ANNCast!
Joining us for a quick chat is Stephanie Sheh, who has put together We Heart Japan, which is planned as a series of events but the first is a fundraising event this Thursday, March 17th, at Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles. There'll be an art auction, anime screenings, voice actor autograph sessions and more, with 100 percent of proceeds benefiting Japanese Earthquake Victims through the Japan NGO Earthquake Relief and Recovery Fund. You can also follow them on Twitter @weheartjapanXO. You can still donate to We Heart Japan even if you aren't in LA - details can be found at their website.
Some other fan-centric charities have popped up in the last few days as well:
AllAboutManga.net's Daniella Orihuela-Gruber has set up Anime and Manga Bloggers For Japan. If you've got a blog, this is your chance to join an already-building cause and raise some cash for Doctors Without Borders and Shelterbox. You can follow Daniella on Twitter @allaboutmanga.
The Unofficial One Piece Podcast is assembling a 24-hour podcastathon broadcast this weekend, part of a larger effort called Anime Fans Give Back To Japan. They're going to broadcast for a full 24 hours, with a big list of special guests, and will be raising funds for The Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Fund. Justin and I will be appearing on the live show on Sunday, March 20th at 12pm PST, but they have a wide variety of guests scheduled so tune in! You can keep up with their efforts on Twitter @otakushelpjapan.
Anime Expo's weekly live video podcast AX Live will be doing an extended live broadcast this Thursday, March 17th, at 7pm PST and will be taking donations for disaster relief during the show. They're going to be checking in with their staff members on the ground in Japan as well, with first-hand status updates on what conditions are like.
If you're attending Zenkaikon this weekend, March 18th - 20th in King of Prussia, PA, they'll be taking donations all weekend for the American Red Cross' Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami fund, with opportunities to donate at collection stations throughout the convention and even during major con events.
IGN's Australian branch is hosting a 24 Japanese Games in 24 Hours live streaming event, wherein they'll marathon classic and famous Japanese videogames for an entire day, taking donations for their own Australian Red Cross Community Fundraising Effort, with all proceeds going to benefit disaster victims in Japan.
UK-based anime site Anime Picks is also hosting a fundraiser focusing on Shelterbox.
If you have information about or are operating a fan-centric disaster relief fundraiser for Japan and you'd like it listed here, please email [email protected] with the information.
