5 Centimeters Per Second (movie) Very good
Afro Samurai (TV)
Ah! My Goddess (TV) Very good Seen both the TV and OAV, Cutsie harem story that is very heartwarming. I loved the increased art quality of the TV series (i like the computer refined lines, so sue me). I like random norse references as well, so that's a plus (all three goddesses are named after norns, plus some other names). I can't think of anything bad about this series, except that there isn't really anything outstanding.
Ah! My Goddess: The Movie Very good A much better love story than the OAV or TV, though hardly the best love story ever told. Basically the same heartwarming and cutsey stuff as in the other two series, but with a much greater adversary and more emphasis on the love between the two characters.
Akira (movie) Good Anime classic. Very trippy and memorable movie, though i would have liked to have seen more background on the Akira phenomena, but you can only fit so much into a single movie. Worth watching, and worth watching a second time.
Angel Sanctuary (OAV) Not really good Very interesting story simply because the main character wishes to enter into a (consentual!) incesuous relationship and spends the entire time fighting to do so. I liked that aspect, since it was quite interesting, but may repulse alot of people. Also, the characters and dialog was bland, and the plot just didn't seem to interest me.
(The) Animatrix (OAV) Very good As a whole, i'm a fan, i think people should at the very least see Second Renaissance (it displays more of the W. Bros. talent for telling stories) and Final Flight for the action scenes and CG. The rest contains some interesting stories within the matrix, while a few are big philosophical/psycological turds (Matrix reloaded anybody?).
Azumanga Daioh (TV) Very good
Baby Blue (movie)
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (TV) Good A journey into the Japanese music industry. Though the songs and dialog have horribly garbled english, there are a few that are quite good (the OP for instance). The story is quite humerous, and has a few characters who i fell in love with and i watched the series because of them. I also wanted to see the development of one of the many possible romances, but the one the story chooses isn't developed that much. Good story, but i wanted more romantic development, and the end just kinda cuts that off =P.
Beyond (OAV) Very good Pretty interesting story. More of the W. Bros. good storytelling, and may leave you with a little something to think about and take away, or not... The OAV also has very stylistic animation. If you liked any of the other Animatrix stories, you'll probably like this one.
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie)
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan (TV)
Chobits (TV) Good Boy meets socially inept girl, girl thusly proceeds to speak in cute-baby talk and forgets to wear clothes and embaress the boy in public, etc. The social commentary about loving robots more than humans is barely interesting, but stupid as well, because i hate the idea of refusing a real girl for a robot, and makes me want to punch any character that makes that choice in the show. Oh, and the ending is lame. The reason i liked it is mostly because Chii is cute, the writers were really good at putting her in situations where she'd react in cute and funny ways.
Chrono Crusade (TV) Very good A very good love story in it's own right (though the main characters never get married or kiss or anything sexual, you can tell they love each other very strongly), with a great ending. I am also a fan of anything dealing with spirituallity and divinity in such a manner: especially when it comes to such spiritual beings rebelling against god. Rosette is also a great character who i grew to like very much, though this isn't to say that there aren't annoying stereotypical characters (Azumaria).
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Masterpiece Yes, very awsome. This was the second series i watched, after trigun, and i was surprised to find that i could like an anime series BETTER than trigun! Once again, this is a must watch, simply for the characters. The slightly dark storytelling is great as well, but exploring the characters through this series was fantastic (Fae easily has the best personality and background story).
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Excellent Eh, seems like another episode of the series that dosen't concentrate on the original characters. Not to say that this movie isn't true to the characters, or that you don't see them much, but they're just there to support the development of the temporary characters.
DearS (TV) Decent
A Detective Story (OAV) Excellent Very good film noir about a detective leaving the matrix. The style is right on, and the development of the plot is well done, until we run into Trinity, then her dialog just ruins everything. I liked it quite a bit simply because of the main character, who was done perfectly.
Egao (special)
Elfen Lied (TV) Excellent I watched this series non-stop. The series surprised me with the duality between 'socially defunked girl with speech problem lives with boy and other girls telling a heartwarming story of love and achievement' and the gory violence the ecchi girl frequently inflicts. Though the fanservice was fairly heavy, i couldn't complain, and there weren't too many sexually embaressing moments for the main character. I did think it was weird that the main character's main romantic intrest was his cousin (i hope that was a mistranslation, because other than that i was rooting for them). Though the character development is quite blunt the antagonist Lucy made a good evil character. The other evil characters were too poorly drawn out to be interesting. Strange combo of blood-bath horror and heartwarming harem romance. OH, i LOVE the OP. The series could've sucked and yet i'd watch the enitre thing just to hear the OP over and over.
Elfen Lied (OAV) Decent Eh, an ok addition to the first series. It added some good qualities to Lucy's character, though i don't like Nana all that much.
(The) Familiar of Zero (TV) Good
Fate/stay night (TV)
Final Approach (TV)
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) Excellent Wow, i love final fantasy VII, and bring back all the characters again makes this an automatic favorite for me. The CG is top notch, and story premise is quite good. The dialoge is also very well done, there are hardly any bad lines. The antagonists were good characters, but the only great character in this story was Tifa, where we can easily see her mess of emotions concerning Could, worry over the children, Aerith's death, and the prospect of Sephiroth returning. Cloud's emotional development was kinda strange and i don't completely understand it, but it wasn't bad. My only real complaint is that the ending was too heartwarming and happy.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (US CG movie) So-so Eh, this movie is only good for the excellent CG and action. There isn't anything memorable about the story (except for the creative premise) or characters.
(The) Final Flight of the Osiris (OAV) Very good Excelent extension to the matrix. The CG is fantastic, an excellent action-short by any means - and contains the most sensual fight scene i've ever seen ;). The dialog in a few places is sheer crap, but what can ya say.. at least it wasn't keanu.
FLCL (OAV) Excellent A very interesting anime in a style that is quite off the wall and takes viewers by the seat of their pants. I personally liked it, though i know several who didn't. This is my prime example of how a story dosen't need to make sense in order for the series to be good (with EVA following second).
Fruits Basket (TV 1/2001) Very good This is an excellent mixture of slice of life happy heartwarming goodness combined with a dark and tragic psycological disease infecting an entire family. Though the series as a whole was quite girly and way too sunshine happy for my tastes, the comedy was good and the characters did go through some seriously depressing issues. I don't think most of those characters could bounce back to such a happy outlook on life after dealing with those issues.
Full Metal Panic! (TV) Good
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Very good
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Good
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) Very good
Gantz (TV)
Gate Keepers 21 (OAV) Good
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Excellent Excellent artwork for it's time, deep characters, and you gotta love the action =). The story is probably as good as anybody can expect from a single movie (series plots are always my favorite because they delve into much more detail). The voice acting on the english side could use some work. The only reason it's not a masterpeice is that the plot and characters weren't all that engaging for me. The ideas discussed about life and existance were interesting though, even if they were presented in a self-important manner. The music is great, but only hints at the excellence of the tracks in the second movie and series.
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) Excellent Once again, excellent animation, wonderful plot and interesting philosphical and psycological ideas discussed in this movie. The entire story was waaay to creepy to be a masterpiece, boardering on horror at times, but the fact that this movie affected me so well and sparks such intellectual thoughts brings up the rating a few points. I really like the dimensions added to Togusa and Batou, they are turn into very real characters during the movie. Most of this movie is centered around some of the greatest drawn (rendered) scenes i've seen in a movie ever, scenes whose detail and breadth serve as more than just beauty for the eye, but are very inspiring and intriguing. The music in this movie is fantastic, adding to an already over-the-top movie.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Masterpiece Excellent, in all areas. I especially like the plot development, considering the fact that a viewer needs to be very attentive to every episode to completely understand the complicated story behind the laughing man. Excellent music completes the animation and voice acting, which are all top-notch. Of course, the series wouldn't be complete without the quest for truth and knowledge behind existance and life. But, I think the final straw in this movie's rating towards masterpeice is definitly the tachikomas, the comic relief that turn into so much more near the series finale.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (TV)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society (movie)
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Masterpiece
Golden Boy (OAV) Good
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Decent
Gunslinger Girl (TV) Masterpiece I don't know why people would dislike this series (see the review on this site). I loved this excelent story concept. Though the only developed characters are the girls themselves, they are very well done characters, with a very thoughtful and intriging premise. Though most people may dislike the harsh treatment of the girls, the story more than justifies this, in the fact that these girls do kill for a living, and disipline is quite necessary for such a serious career. Several deep and well addressed issues are faced in this series, such as the de-humanization of cyborized humans, ethical treatment of 'programmed' humans, repercussions of 'programmed' affection and emotions, issues with prototype body augmentation, as well as innocence while still being a secret assassin. This series might make alot of people uncomfortable because of the horrible issues posed by the premise, but the fact that the series evokes such emotion and empathy for the characters is telling.
Gurren Lagann (TV) Good
Haibane Renmei (TV) Excellent A great metaphor for death and reconciliation, mostly alluding to purgatory. The series deals with difficult issues like spirituality and good vs. evil very masterfully, baring very strong emotions in the thick of the series. Some of the episodes are very lighthearted, but it adds to the series by making the despressing and hopless episodes more impacting, giving the series an overall feeling of melancholy that is not without hope. The art is stylistically fantastic, plain and beautiful in it's own fashion, fitting perfectly with the story. I also enjoy the unapologetic way the series leaves so many questions unanswered. The series also is full of mind-captivating metaphors. The characters feel very real, but by no means did i fall in love with them, but i did worry about them and care for them in times of duress. A very beautiful story overall.
Hand Maid Mai (OAV) Not really good
Hellsing (TV) Good
His and Her Circumstances (TV) Excellent This story is almost a masterpiece. Probably one of the more natural and honest love stories, the kind where they don't try to make-believe that two high-school students are going to fall into a shakespearian-level 'true-love'. This story basically tells of the first love, (the first relationship that can have the word 'love' applied to it), while in high school, and does it very artfully. Every silent moment is captured, the shyness, the passion. The intense emotions were so well convayed that this series gave me very strong butterflies as i relived my first 'real' relationship. There is something about first love that is quite scary, and beautiful at the same time. Though the animation looks somewhat bare, the still frames are very beautifully done. This series definitly stabs at the heart of human emotion and innocence. I think the only reason it isn't a masterpiece is that it affected me TOO much, and was rather unsettling =P.
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) Excellent Excellent story of the fantastic imaginary world, with a warming story of the heart. The best character Calcifer, the comic relief demon-flame, with excellent Japanese and English voice acting (Billy Chrystal!). The humor and affectionate story will surely touch everyone, even the antagonists are loveable. The story itself is another excellent example of Miyazaki entertainment, and at the same time stands out amongst his other works. The series, while immensly entertaining, suffers from the same thing i see in other Miyazaki works: they don't stick in my mind afterward, as there isn't anything substantial to consider after all is said and done, except for the talent behind the story telling. I also have a few problems with the ending, some details seem to counteract the style of the rest of the movie.
Jikū Bōken Nūmamonjaa (OAV) Weak I thought it was cool to find out that there were anime shorts of one of my favorite video games ever, but then i watched them... not too impressed...
Kid's Story (OAV) Decent
Kino's Journey (TV)
Last Exile (TV) Excellent
Last Order Final Fantasy VII (OAV) Excellent Wonderful, an animated short rehashing the story from Nibelheim in FFVII giving depth to the incident that the game may have past over. Though most of the movie is unoriginal, it does add some additional motives and detail to Cloud's character, and fills in most of the gap between Nibelheim and the time when Cloud wanders back into Midgar. The game left me with a feeling of disgust towards Zack, for being a half-hearted replacement of Cloud, and never being a fully-developed character, but this OAV shows Zack as a three-dimensional character, defining him as himself, and Cloud as the copy-cat. This OAV allows me to replay the game over and over without actually playing the game, excellent!
Little Nemo - Adventures in Slumberland (movie)
Love Hina (TV) Very good
Love Hina X'mas Special - Silent Eve Very good
Lovely Complex (TV)
Mahoromatic - Automatic Maiden (TV) Very good
Mahoromatic: Something More Beautiful (TV)
(La) Maison en Petits Cubes (movie)
Matriculated (OAV) Awful
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Masterpiece
Millennium Actress (movie)
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV) Good
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz Special Edition (movie) Decent
Mushi-Shi (TV) Good
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Good
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Excellent
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Excellent A colossal anime classic, a psycological journey that is the first of it's kind. The artwork is mediocre by my standards, and i am not a large fan of mech shows, but this series needs to be seen by everyone. The mystery and fantasic magic surrounding the angels and sons of adam and lilith is very intriguing, espeically since the series leaves you to fill in the last of the puzzle peices by yourself. Every character, (besides Shinji and Rei perhaps) starts out as a sane, normal person, but as the series progresses (especially in the movies) they reveal their tragic psycological flaws, each deep, realistic, and fasinating. The series itself is cheeky in some places, disturbing in others, and i liked both the disturbing and happy episodes, though a few episodes in the middle of the series i could've done away with. The ending was disappointing, but the movies solved that issue and put a satisfactory ending on an excellent series.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) Very good
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Very good
Nodame Cantabile (TV) Excellent
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) Excellent
Nurse Witch Komugi-Chan Magikarte Z (OAV)
Oh My Goddess! (OAV) Very good
On Your Mark (movie)
Ouran High School Host Club (TV)
Pale Cocoon (OAV)
Paprika (movie) Good
Perfect Blue (movie)
Planetes (TV) Excellent One of the best love stories ever! This series is an emotional roller coaster when it gets into the thick of things, and takes advantage of how attached you become to the characters to tell a very heart-wrenching story. The early part of the series is light-hearted and develops it's very likable characters, although it tries to address issues of space travel in a way that i felt was heavy-handed and overblown. The best part of this series is the realistic manner in which they demonstrate the future, (profit margins, international law, bureaucracy, and zero-gee physics), though the finale of the series is a close second: not a typical sickly sweet drawn out ending, but it is very joyful and romantic.
Please Teacher! (TV) Decent
Please Twins! (TV) Decent
Princess Mononoke (movie) Good
Program (OAV) So-so
RahXephon (TV) Excellent
Read or Die (OAV) Good
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) Masterpiece Umm.. Wow... yeah, this is probably one of the greatest tragic love stories of all time (all the best love stories are tragic). If you haven't seen this, YOU NEED TO SEE IT.. and if you have seen it, well, you know how good it is.. you don't need to read my crappy opinion about it!
Samurai 7 (TV) Decent
Samurai Champloo (TV) Excellent Awsome series. Mostly each episode can be viewed in and of itself (they hardly ever string together into a solid plot) but as a whole they come together in a very strong character development sense. These characters are so fun to watch, as they are very unique and true to their own nature as they interact with each other, but violate their individuality when they come to view each other as companions (very well told story)... The end was ok.. I thought a better ending would have been the season one ending, but that's just me..
Scrapped Princess (TV) Very good Very lovable characters! I don't think there was a character in here that i hated because he/she was unrealistic or stereotypical. The animation was great as well, (I love BONES), and the story is great at the beginning, but i would have written the end differently. I also disliked the typical 'mech' thing that they seemed to throw in there for no reason.
Second Renaissance (OAV) Masterpiece Wonderful! Everytime i watch this thing i see new aspects and metaphors (they're very common and easy enough to spot that i can see them easily). So, most people may be bored with the blunt metaphors, but in many films/shows metaphors are so obvious that they slap you in the face with it.. these are subtle enough for my taste. This definitly shows more talent for the W.Bros. story-telling capabilities.
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) So-so Eh.. creepy, internet psychological stuff... i thought it was ok, but i probably won't watch it again
She, The Ultimate Weapon (TV) Good Excellent story telling idea, but i think this was fairly poorly done. The entire time i watched this series i was thinking of ways that i'd write it so that it would be better. I think this would make a better book than a TV series, because there are so many subtle character issues that this series dosen't address. Also, the story dosen't even try to excuse it's illogical premise, which has it's good sides but it left me confused about the whole machine/human situation at times. But this was such a good premise that i have thought in depth about how i would write a similar story, including several test paragraphs.
Spirited Away (movie) Excellent (dub & sub) Miyazaki film.. it was fun to watch, very good story telling, blah blah blah.. For some reason, his characters are so regular and lifelike that i can't get attached to them as well as i can to the ones with the unrealistic personality defects.. maybe the storytelling and story enviornment is so fantastic that it just detracts from the characters for me.. i dunno.
Summer Wars (movie)
Tokyo Godfathers (movie) Good Wonderful movie, even non-anime lovers will like this one. Great comic value and very well developed and lifelike characters.
Toradora! (TV)
Trigun (TV) Excellent Great series! introduced me to anime, so i'm a bit biased. Probably one of my favorite main characters, though he may not be the deepest, or the coolest, he is definitly an original character. The confrontation at the end seemed to downplay both antagonist and protagonist and seemed a little rushed, hardly a battle between super-humans. Ok animation, but the story and characters will ensure that this will remain an anime favorite for years to come.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (movie) Very good Nice action movie. Hardly anything to write home about, but it does have an interesting main character, good animation, and a great antagonist. Also, this story isn't afraid to kill off a few lovable characters or produce a bitter-sweet ending.
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) Excellent Great story, lovely animation, and a very astonishing story. Easily the best anime made by a single artist ever. The story itself was touching, and rang very true. My only complaint is that i find it hard to believe that such young children can find what can be called 'true love' (let alone be sent off to war!), but in order for the story to work it has to be that way.
Welcome to the NHK (TV) Very good
Witch Hunter Robin (TV) Very good Great animation, lovable characters, though the series didn't seem to delve into the potential for some arcane mysteries, and the ending was fairly weak in my opinion.
World Record (OAV) Awful A story about the persistance of human will struggling against all odds and boundaries (the machines in the matrix), basically an athelete who dosen't know he's in the matrix who can run fast and the agents try to stop him for some reason (apparently they don't want him running too fast or something).. ok story, i dislike the animation... other animatrix stories were much better
