Virtual Artist KAF Throws A Surreal Dance Party With Producer Tsumiki On 'Chewing Disco'

Also Set To Perform At YouTube Music Weekend On Aug. 23

Tokyo, Japan — Japanese virtual artist KAF seeks escape on “Chewing Disco,” and locates it in a dance-pop song bordering on the surreal. The latest installment in the 20-year-old creator's collaborative “Suite” series finds her linking up with producer Tsumiki, who creates a disorienting but ultimately euphoric track for KAF to lose herself in.

“Chewing Love” also offers KAF a chance to bring her dynamic voice to the disjointed sounds of modern Japanese electronic music. Producer Tsumiki started out as a Vocaloid producer, meaning he created songs using the singing-synthesizer software of the same name, represented by the avatar Hatsune Miku. He's since become one of the most buzzed-about creators in J-pop today, both as a solo name and as a member of the upbeat dance-pop duo NOMELON NOLEMON.

On “Chewing Love,” Tsumiki adds sonic elements to an otherwise grooveable song that help keep it feeling left of center, including hypnotic chant breakdowns and mutating melodies. Yet despite the constant changes, it retains a catchy core and gives KAF room space to show the full range of her voice, reminding of the versatility that has made her one of the most exciting names in a new era of J-pop.

“Chewing Love” comes with a video marking a first for KAF — a clip where she herself isn't the central focus. Instead, dazzling animation courtesy of sonepon, one of KAF's favorite illustrators, adds visual flair to the song. The clip was directed by the prolific Katsushika Shusshin, and it helps expand the overall aesthetic of KAF's art while also emphasizing the music itself.

KAF is also set to perform at YouTube Music Weekend on Friday, Aug. 23. She goes on at 5:50 p.m. Japan Standard Time, as part of the video platform's celebration of digital-native artists blossoming in Japan. Watch it here.

“Chewing Love” is available now on all streaming services.
