Ikeda Shunsuke, who had the main role in the popular TV series of the mid-seventies, “Kikaida 01,” passed away on June 11, 2010. He is best known in Hawaii for his role as Ichiro, Kikaida's older brother. The Kikaida and Kikaida 01 series aired in Hawaii from 1974—1976, and the characters became pop icons and superheroes to children of every ethnic background and neighborhood in Hawaii.
In 1975, the Kikaida Brothers came to Hawaii for a show at the old H.I.C. Exhibition Hall and Hilo Civic Auditorium. Crowds were dazzled, and both human and costume forms were welcomed like rock stars wherever they went. The “Kikaida” series was revived on Hawaiian television in 2001, and the DVD Box Sets were produced locally by JN Productions between 2004—2007. Ikeda along with Kikaida star, Ban Daisuke returned to Hawaii for many promotional and charity events, and were greeted by the same crowd, only this time, by children of original fans.
A memorial service honoring Ikeda will be held on November 11, 2010, his 70th birthday at the Blaisdell Center Hawaii Suites from 5:00-7:00 pm. All Ikeda Shunsuke and Kikaida fans are invited to this free event to reminisce and share fond memories of their favorite super hero from the 70's.
He loved Hawaii so deeply that it was his wish to have his ashes scattered here in our waters. Ikeda is survived by wife Toshie and daughter Miri.
