A live-action Japanese-British comedy series is "in heavy development" about two young women, one British, one Japanese, striving to become manga artists in Tokyo.

Called How To Be a Sensei the series is a co-development partnership between Nippoon TV in Japan and Anyway Content in the UK. The writers are Japan's Itaru Mizuno, who wrote the 2023 series Rebooting, about a woman who dies in a car accident and has the chance to redo her life; and Britain's Zoë Tomalin, who has credits on Have I Got News for You and Hypothetical.

The series would have hour-long episodes, and the idea is being taken to the MIPCOM Cannes market.

Worldscreen reports that the series would be set in both Japan and the UK, and would be a bilingual series. It also quotes Mizuno on the series. He says, "“How to Be a Sensei is a sisterhood comedy-drama about two young girls, one from the U.K. and one from Japan, who pursue their dream of becoming manga artists. Along the way, they clash hard but also inspire each other to grow, ultimately forming a strong and lasting friendship."

Mizuno adds that, "The cultural contrast between Japan and the U.K. provides a rich foundation for comedy, while the universal theme of young people chasing their dreams is something that resonates globally.
