Hong Kong film distributor Neofilms announced last Friday that it will open Back Street Girls: Gokudols (Back Street Girls -Yakuza Idols-), the live-action film adaptation of Jasmine Gyuh's Back Street Girls comedy manga, in Hong Kong on May 2.
The film opened in Japan on February 8. Keinosuke Hara directed the film, with a script by Shōichirō Masumoto and Hidehiro Itō. The project also included a live-action series that premiered on February 17.
The film starred Jin Shirasu, Reiya Masaki, Masato Hanazawa, Natsumi Okamoto, Ruka Matsuda, Akane Sakanoue, Tetsuya Sugaya, Nana Asakawa, Hitoshi Ozawa, Dōri Sakurada, Ren Ōsugi, and Kouichi Iwaki.
Kodansha Comics is publishing the manga digitally in English, and it describes the series:
Tough gangland retribution takes a disturbingly bright, shiny turn in this insanely guilty pleasure about 3 yakuzas who, as repayment for their failures, must undergo major surgery and become … a hot female idol trio! So what happens when they become the next big pop sensation!?
The manga launched in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine in March 2015, and ended last September. Kodansha published the manga's 11th compiled volume on June 6. The manga has more than 450,000 copies in print.
The manga inspired a television anime adaptation that premiered in Japan last July. Netflix began streaming the anime on December 12.
