Wall Street Journal: Nintendo Plans to Release New Switch Model in 2019

Console might be slated for release in summer 2019, according to newspaper's sources

The Wall Street Journal newspaper reported on Thursday that Nintendo is planning to release a new version of its Switch hybrid home/portable game platform next year, citing suppliers and other sources. According to the newspaper's sources, Nintendo is aiming for a release in the latter half of 2019, possibly as early as summer 2019.

The Wall Street Journal's sources stated that Nintendo is updating the console to maintain its "sales momentum." The sources did not comment on what specific features Nintendo plans to upgrade on the platform, but mentioned that Nintendo is looking at improving the display.

The console launched worldwide on March 3, 2017, and it had sold an estimated 330,637 units in Japan within three days of its launch. The sales surpassed 500,000 units in Japan in four weeks — outpacing Sony's PlayStation 4 over the same time period — and surpassed 1 million units in Japan by June 25, 2017.

Nintendo previously revealed the console has sold 19.67 million units worldwide as of June 30.

The company previously stated it expects to sell 20 million Nintendo Switch units in the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2019.
