ICv2: U.S. Manga Sales Up 29% in 2016
posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
Milton Griepp, CEO of comics industry news source ICv2, stated on October 5 that manga sales in the United States increased 29% to US$110 million in 2016, compared to 2015. Griepp reported the number during the ICv2 Insider Sessions conference that the company regularly holds during New York Comic Con.
While Griepp credited Viz Media's Pokémon manga releases with the sales increase, NPD BookScan executive Kristen McLean said during the same presentation that the manga market has seen growth in multiple genres, including fantasy, horror, and romance.
McLean's talk at the New York Comic Con Insider Sessions event also presented a look at profile differences between people buying online, at local comic book stores, and at traditional brick and mortar retailers.
ICv2 previously reported a growth of 13% increase in manga sales in the first eight months of 2015. At the time, ICv2 reported that the growth of manga in both 2013 and 2014 marked the first consecutive growth in manga sales since 2006-2007.
ICv2 released its list of top 10 selling manga franchises from spring 2017 in July.
