The game is slated for release for both consoles in Japan on September 28, and in Europe on October 20. The game is also slated for release in North America this fall on the Nintendo Switch. A limited-edition release for the Nintendo Switch will bundle three original soundtrack CDs and character cards.

The game's story begins when, the Kingdom of Aitriss is enveloped in darkness without warning, and an otherworldly gate appears within the castle. Powerful creatures overpower the castle guards. The castle soon falls, and the darkness slowly but surely encroaches upon the Kingdom. But there is hope in the form of Shion and Liane, the prince and princess who escaped even as the castle burned. They possess a thread that ties together the destiny of heroes. Bearing the Shield of Fire granted to them by their mother, their journey to confront the powerful darkness begins.

The game's playable characters include Marth from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light; Robin (male and female), Chrom, Lissa, Frederick, Cordelia, and Lucina from Fire Emblem Awakening; Corrin (female), Xander, and Ryoma from Fire Emblem Fates; and original characters Liane and Shion.

Koei Tecmo Games, its Omega Force team, and its Team Ninja team are developing the game. Omega Force is a subsidiary of Koei Tecmo, and it develops Koei Tecmo's Musou (Warriors) series of games. The series is known for its action hack-and-slash gameplay where players control a character to fight hundreds of enemies at once.
