The official YouTube account for Square Enix Collective began streaming a promotional video for Kanagawa-based game developer Cherrymochi's Tokyo Dark psychological horror game last week. The video reveals that the game will launch for PC via Steam on September 7.
Cherrymochi describes the game:
Tokyo Dark is an anime-style horror adventure game combining point and click and visual novel genres. The story follows Detective Itō accross Tokyo, searching for the truth behind her partner's strange disappearance. Featuring puzzles, stat management, and difficult decisions, Tokyo Dark puts the narrative in the hands of the player. Players' decisions change their character, opening or locking options and leading to multiple endings. Tokyo Dark is currently being developed for PC and Mac.
In the game, Detective Itō journeys through Tokyo's underworld, collecting clues and solving puzzles to search for her missing partner. Players' decisions affect Itō's characteristics and options, and the S.P.I.N (Sanity, Professionalism, Investigation, Neurosis) system tracks decisions. The game has 11 possible endings.
Cherrymochi submitted the game to Square Enix Collective in January 2015, and it was later green-lit for release on Steam. The developers held a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for the release from May to June 2015. The campaign raised more than five times the funding goal.
Cherrymochi describes itself as "an independent game studio that aims to bridge Japanese and Western game design." The company is based near Tokyo, and the staff members are from five countries. The developer is "inspired by Japanese pop culture, anime aesthetic and Western adventure games."
