Shinkai's 'your name.' Tops Box Office For 8th Weekend

Makoto Shinkai's your name. (Kimi no Na wa.) anime film ranked #1 for the October 15-16 weekend — and maintained its top position for the eighth straight weekend. The film earned 468 million yen (about US$4.5 million) and sold 347,000 tickets over the weekend. The film has earned 15,414,488,300 yen (about US$148 million) as of Sunday, after 52 days at the Japanese box office. The film has sold a total of 11,842,864 tickets.
The film won the Best Animated Feature Film award at the 49th annual Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain on Saturday.
The film is still the fifth highest-grossing anime film in Japan, and has not yet surpassed Ponyo's 15.50 billion yen (US$152.9 million) earnings. The film is also the 6th highest-grossing Japanese film, and 11th highest-grossing Japanese or overseas film overall. The film already surpassed the 2013 Japanese box office total of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's The Wind Rises (12.02 billion yen or US$118.6 million). The only anime films to earn more than your name. are Ghibli and Miyazaki's Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and Ponyo. The film is now projected to possibly approach 20 billion yen (US$200 million).
Kyoto Animation's anime film of Yoshitoki Ōima's A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi) manga dropped from #4 to #5 in its fifth weekend. The film opened on September 17 on 120 screens.
GANTZ:O, the full 3D CG anime film based on Hiroya Oku's Gantz manga, ranked #6 in its opening weekend. The film opened in Japan last Friday on October 14.
The third live-action Ushijima the Loan Shark film (Yamikin Ushijima-kun Part 3) film dropped from #9 off the chart in its fourth weekend. Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi's Shin Godzilla film also dropped from #10 off the chart in its 12th weekend.
