Thunderbirds Co-Creator Sylvia Anderson Passes Away
posted on by Kyle Hallmark
Sylvia Anderson, the co-creator of the Thunderbirds science-fiction television show, passed away on March 15 after a short illness. She was 88.
Anderson co-created and co-wrote the Thunderbirds series with her late husband Gerry Anderson, and she also provided the voice for the character Lady Penelope. The show began airing in the United Kingdom in 1965. The series was remade into the Kagaku Kyujotai Techno Voyager television anime series in 1982, although the Andersons were not directly involved in the production. The English-dubbed version of the series was renamed to Thunderbirds 2086.
Three new episodes of Thunderbirds were commissioned last year to commemorate the series' 50th anniversary. A separate Thunderbirds Are Go remake is now airing in several countries, including the United Kingdom and Japan.
Anderson worked with her husband for AP Films, a company that he founded. The company later became Century 21 Productions. The couple worked on many marionette and live-action titles together including Joe 90, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Stingray, Fireball XL5, and The Secret Service.
Anderson also worked for the US TV network HBO, and became its head of programming in the UK.
Gerry Anderson passed away in 2012 after a battle with mixed dementia.
