posted on by Sarah Nelkin
Dancer Yume Yamamoto revealed on Tuesday that a stage play adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto's Space Pirate Captain Harlock manga has been green-lit. The play will hold nine performances at the Shinjukumura Live theater from June 8 to 12.
Mitsunori Harada is directing and scripting the play, titled Captain Harlock ~Jigen Sōkai~ (Captain Harlock: Dimensional Voyage). Yamamoto will play the role of Kei Yūki. Other cast members include Takeshi Hayashino (The Prince of Tennis musical) as Harlock himself, Gon Suzuki as Tadashi Daiba, Emi Itō as Shizuka Namino, Hiromu as Diver Zero, Yukari Shimotsuki as Isora Kirita, Konona Shiba as Miime, Takao Yamada as Yattaran, and Kei Ōgi as Lafresia, among others.
Ticket sales will begin in April.
In Matsumoto's original 1977-79 Space Pirate Captain Harlock manga, the title character rebels against Earth's inept government and fights for humanity with his crew of 40 aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia. The manga inspired a 1978-1979 television anime, and Crunchyroll and Funimation streamed the series. The anime inspired anime feature films, original video anime, and the sequel Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit SSX. AnimEigo released the Arcadia of My Youth film in North America in 2003. The manga also inspired a CG film in 2013. Video streaming service Netflix released the film in English in 2014, Ketchup Entertainment released the film on DVD, and Twilight Time released the film on Blu-ray Disc.
