Takashi Yamazaki's live-action film version of the Space Battleship Yamato space opera anime will play in theaters in Los Angeles, Honolulu, San Francisco, and Canada starting next month. It will play at the Downtown Independent in Los Angeles on October 19 and 27, at the Ward Stadium 16 in Honolulu from October 25 to 31, at the 4 Star Theatre in San Francisco on October 26, and in 20 Cineplex theaters in Canada on November 11.
Here is the trailer from Manga Entertainment's home video release in the United Kingdom:
SMAP band member Takuya Kimura (Howl's Moving Castle's Howl) headlines this film based on the anime classic, which was adapted as Star Blazers in English. The other cast members include Meisa Kuroki (Vexille - 2077 Isolation of Japan's Vexille, Crows Zero's Luca), Toshiro Yanagiba, and Tsutomu Yamazaki. Takashi Yamazaki helmed Returner, Always: Sunset on Third Street, and last year's Ballad, before directing Yamato. Aerosmith vocalist Steven Tyler wrote and sang the film's theme song, "Love Lives."
The film earned 943 million yen (about US$11.4 million) in its first five days at the Japanese box office in December 2010. It then became the top-selling domestic live-action film on Blu-ray Disc in Japan in 2012. It already played in a private screening in Southern California in November 2010 and at the Japan Film Festival of San Francisco last month.
