posted on by Jennifer Sherman
The Sweet Poolside manga by Shūzō Oshimi (The Flowers of Evil, Boku wa Mari no Naka) will receive a live-action film adaptation. Daigo Matsui (Daily Lives of High School Boys live-action film, Afro Tanaka) is directing the film and writing the script. The adaptation is slated to open in Japan in 2014.
The manga's story focuses on Toshihiko Ōta, a male swimming club member who has unusually hairless skin. He meets the female swimming club member Ayako Gotō who is unusually hairy.
Kenta Suga (Kamen Rider x Super Sentai x Uchū Keiji Super Hero Taisen Z) will play Toshihiko, while Yuiko Kariya (Suzuki-sensei) will play Ayako. The Japanese rock band Mowmow Lulu Gyaban will perform the theme song "Love Shout!"
Oshimi's original manga debuted in Kodansha's Young Magazine in 2004. Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine re-serialized the manga in the May to August 2011 issues. The series' compiled book volume shipped in Japan in August 2011.
A television anime adaptation of Oshimi's The Flowers of Evil manga premiered in Japan on April 5. North American anime licensing company Sentai Filmworks licensed the anime, and Crunchyroll is currently streaming the series outside of Japan as it airs. Vertical publishes the original "corrupt pure-love story" manga in North America.
